Out of Sight, Out of Mind

Do you know where your garbage goes?  After it leaves the curb most people don’t give it another thought; out of sight, out of mind.  But our daily habit of throwing things away has a price, especially when there is no “away”.

On July 24th at 10:30am the community is invited to take a guided tour of the landfill, transfer station, recycling and composting systems with Deschutes Recycling at Knott Landfill to get a unique perspective on just what happens when you throw things away.

The Environmental Center organizes similar tours for 5th grade EarthSmart students, and the teachers and parent chaperones on the trip learn right along with their students.  From “paying more attention to what we put in the garbage” and being “interested in learning more about composting” to “recycling more” and wanting to “REDUCE!” after having experienced the tour, seeing what happens to all of our stuff can be eye opening for anybody.

The tour is being organized by C3 Events as part of their Towards Zero Waste initiative to green their local festivals and events.  If you plan to check out Munch N Music, Summerfest, a show at the Athletic Club, or any of the other 30+ events they are hosting this summer and fall, then you will have a chance to experience their new initiative when you look to dispose of your compostable cup or recyclable can.  Rethink Waste has been assisting in this initiative through providing banners and signage for the new Zero Waste Stations.

The tour is free and open to anyone in the community who is interested in seeing and learning more about what happens to all that “stuff” we put out at the curb.
