Oregon Environmental Literacy Plan

Recently, The Gray Family Foundation shared the success story of the Oregon Environmental Literacy Plan (OELP). The article explains how OELP provides a road map to ensure that every Oregon child has the opportunity to experience the wonders of nature and learn to care for, and engage with, their place and community over a lifetime. The Environmental Center is proud to be an organizational host for OELP. We believe it’s important for kids to spend time learning and growing in the great outdoors. Youth need these first-hand experiences to understand how they impact our environment, develop a life-long ethic of stewardship, ask questions, explore new topics and ideas, and relate their findings to everyday life.

For the last two years, Kirin Stryker, Sustainability Educator, has represented our organization and all of Central Oregon as part of a statewide program council. In this role, Kirin supported teachers in their efforts to incorporate environmental literacy within curriculum; created activities for K-12 students that tied into education standards; and trained non-formal educators according to NAAEE guidelines for excellence. The Environmental Center is proud to be a part of this success story, and we’re excited for more forward progress!
