Happy AmeriCorps Week!
AmeriCorps Week, March 8-14, 2020, is a celebration of all things AmeriCorps – from the programs and organizations that make this national service initiative possible in communities across the country, to the members who have pledged to “Get Things Done” since the program’s inception in 1994.
What is AmeriCorps anyway?
People of all ages and backgrounds dedicating their time and skills to Get. Things. Done.
Central Oregon and The Environmental Center have been lucky to have been served by six AmeriCorps NCCC teams. AmeriCorps NCCC strengthens communities and develops leaders through direct, team-based national and community service. The teams that served in Bend helped families across Central Oregon save energy and money by helping with community education and installing free LED light bulbs and water-saving fixtures.
Since it’s inception, more than 1,000,000 members have served and 75,000 members serve every year–benefitting millions of Americans. 79% of alumni say they plan to be actively engaged in the community which we have definitely seen in action here in Bend!
We took a few minutes to chat with one of our past service members who just so happens to now be living in Bend to give you a little perspective into who these service members are. Tatiana served in AmeriCorps in 2016-2017 and moved to Bend in 2018.
Where are you from?
DeKalb, Illinois.
What motivated you to serve?
I was initially interested in Peace Corps but realized a lot of places in the US needed help too. I thought AmeriCorps was a great way to build a community of like-minded friends 🙂
What was the most valuable lesson you learned?
To help others!! It will come back around and help you in the end. Serving is something anyone aan do and is appreciated by many!
What was your favorite project you worked on and why?
My favorite project was working with Santa Clara county parks. We got to spend a lot of time outdoors at the various parks in the region. We also did lots of projects including remodeling garden areas, putting in park benches, making parks more ADA accessible, and more. We also stayed in an old correctional facility.
Did your service shape where you are today?
Yes! I try to embed volunteerism into my life and really enjoy doing it. I think my eyes are more open to the world of nonprofits.
