A Living Building Rooted in Place – Green Tour Site # 6

The Environmental Center

Desert Rain gate

Site #7 – 22 NW Shasta Place

Desert Rain is the first residential property to qualify for certification under the international Living Building Challenge (LBC) – a program that defines the most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment possible today – with stringent requirements in 7 performance areas called Petals.

“Imagine a building so designed and constructed to function as elegantly and efficiently as a flower.”

                 -Living Building Challenge

These Petals address key areas to rapidly diminish the gap between current limits and the end-game positive solutions we seek. They include: Place, Water, Energy, Health & Happiness, Materials, Equity and Beauty.

Like a flower, a Living Building, is rooted in place and lives on the resources it has at hand. This home produces net positive energy – more energy than it uses in a given year. Desert Rain, although situated in the high desert, also captures all the water that it uses on site.

Find out more about how this home sustains itself on the Green Tour on Saturday, September 24th from 10:00 – 5:00.
