What got you interested in education?
I remember being in grade school and just being in awe of my teachers. I was amazed at how much they could manage in the day. The impact they had on their students was something that drew me into education. I believe in supporting people’s autonomy in how they choose to learn, and I recognize this as an area where I will continue to grow in this role.
What excites you the most about living and working in Central Oregon?
More sunny days 🙂 The opportunity to learn from the community and therefore experience growth, new friendships, and outdoor adventures. One of the reasons I moved to Oregon was for the opportunity to interact with nature. I feel like this state will challenge how I think about waste and overall how I choose to consume.
If you could be any animal what would you be and why?
I would be a hummingbird. In my culture they represent joy and resilience. I chose to view challenges as opportunities (once I had a good cry and vent session) and as a way to show resilience and faith in my move from Dallas, Texas to Oregon. Also hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backward!
Outside of work, what hobbies and activities do you do in your free time?
Ever since I was a little girl I enjoyed reading and coloring/making art. I allowed for my love of reading to dive more into wellness, outdoor/botany books and also poetry. Often when I go for a hike or do a meditation I have words that will resonate with the experience that I am having and that turns into a poem for me a lot of the time. Over the years I got closer to these hobbies and the time that I get to spend doing these activities is sacred to me.
If you see Jessica in the classroom or in the community, make sure to say hi!
