Closing Internship Thoughts with Delaney

We had the pleasure of hosting Delaney as our intern for several months in partnership with COIC Youth Compass Program. Delaney was the Marketing and Graphic Design intern, and we couldn’t be happier with her work! Delaney not only designed several incredible stickers for our programs, but she went through the process of updating designs based on feedback, and using creative briefs to perfect her work. The design process is a lot of back and forth, and Delaney navigated that process like a pro! In addition the amazing stickers she made us, we got to brainstorm as a team on our brand new program Reuse Deschutes. Delaney was part of the ideation process, which involved lots of notes, scribbles, strategically scrolling social media for ideas, and coming up with fun and fresh ideas on how to market this brand new project. Read on to hear about Delaney’s experience!

What part of the internship was your favorite?

I really enjoyed designing the stickers that were at Mountain Film as well as really letting my creativity take over to create something new and fun. I also really enjoyed working under Mary, it was such a pleasure to be mentored by such a kind hearted, fun individual.

What is something new you learned?

I learned that within the design process there is a lot of back and forth to make a design fit the criteria of the ones who commissioned it, and sometimes the design isn’t used at all. It’s important to be able to pick yourself back up again after the initial disappointment and continue to use your energy to fuel your future design endeavors, and I think that’s a pretty valuable skill.

What skills do you want to continue building?

I want to continue building my marketing skills and more specifically learn how the marketing process works in terms of hooking the audience on what you’re trying to promote.

What environmental topics interested you the most?

I really loved learning about Reuse Deschutes and how that program will really make a positive impact on the environment within our community. It was so cool to know that you yourself can make a difference by doing something as simple as using reusable takeout containers.

What do you want to do after high school?

I’d like to do to a 4 year college and major in graphic design as well as play club waterpolo at the college I choose to go to.

If you are interested in hosting a high school intern for 60 hours, you can reach out to Laurie Harrer (she/her) the Youth Career Connect Program Coordinator with the COIC Youth Compass Program. Laurie reached out to our team to place Delaney, and we were super impressed by how easy the process was. COIC Youth Compass Program fully funds the internships so all participants are paid, and as the host organization all we had to do was approve Delaney’s hours each week. This was a super pleasant experience and we encourage others to contact Laurie if they are interested!
