Building a Better Bend Hosts Spring Lecture
Local group works with American Planning Association to bring sustainable transportation expert Jeffrey Tumlin to Bend .
Bend, Oregon – March 7, 2013 – Nonprofit organization Building a Better Bend, which seeks to positively impact the development and growth of Bend, today announced it will host Jeffrey Tumlin, a nationally recognized expert in sustainability, on April 25. Tumlin, author of Sustainable Transportation Planning and a principal with Nelson/Nygaard in San Francisco, is coming to Bend as part of a speaking tour sponsored by the Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association (OAPA) and the Transportation and Growth Management Program (TGM).
“Working with organizations around the state with similar goals – such as sustainable, smart growth – is part of our mission at Building a Better Bend,” said Brian Harrington, co-chair of the group, which is in its tenth year of bringing educational lectures to Central Oregon. “When we began speaking with the OAPA about a spring lecture, we knew that Jeff Tumlin could bring ideas for shaping sustainable transportation in our growing region.”
Tumlin has worked for nearly two decades leading plans for transit station areas, downtown revitalization and university campuses, and has delivered lectures and led classes around the world. In his projects, he focuses on reducing traffic congestion, CO2 emissions and air pollution, while boosting economic vitality. He has worked successfully on projects that have accommodated millions of square feet of growth without adding to motor vehicle congestion.
While visiting Central Oregon for the April 25th lecture, Tumlin will study the region and bring his real-life experience to bear on issues facing the Bend area. His lecture, entitled “Transportation Planning: Minimizing the Impacts of Growth”, will present innovative ideas for sustainable growth and stimulate a discussion about how to apply these ideas locally.
Tumlin’s projects have won awards from the General Services Administration, American Planning Association, American Society of Landscape Architects, Congress for the New Urbanism, and Urban Land Institute. He is the author of Sustainable Transportation Planning: Tools for Creating Healthy, Vibrant and Resilient Communities, published by Wiley in 2012.
