We’re Hiring: Sustainability Educator

The Environmental Center’s Mission is to embed sustainability into daily life in Central Oregon. For us, sustainability is about people, the planet and prosperity for all. We seek to build a society that meets human needs equitably, lives within our planet’s ecological limits, and build a prosperous economy for all. The Environmental Center’s (TEC) Sustainable Youth and Schools program provides sustainability education for Central Oregon youth and teachers. We educate youth about sustainability and how their choices can have an impact on the planet, through classroom presentations, school activities and projects, outdoor school days and other programs. We have approximately 10,000 student contacts a year through our EarthSmart Program, Water Conservation Program and Outdoor School days.

This position is a critical part of our sustainability education team, supporting the program director in the planning, delivery and evaluation of our education programs. The ideal candidate will have a passion for sustainability and resource conservation and meet the preferred qualifications below. The position requires a willingness to teach in the classroom as well as outside and is the lead staff for our City of Bend water conservation education program.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILIITES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Work with the program director to plan, promote, coordinate, schedule, deliver and evaluate youth education programs and activities
• Assist in developing and updating youth education program curriculum and materials; ensure alignment with local, state and other educational standards, as directed by your supervisor
• Complete all follow up reports, student tracking and other pertinent information for funding grants, contracts, and agreements
  Answer email and telephone inquiries and provide accurate information about TEC’s EarthSmart Program and City of Bend water conservation education program
• Assist in evaluating TEC’s education programs for effectiveness and alignment with TEC’s strategic plan.
• Complete periodic evaluations for City of Bend Water program and meet with City staff, as per City funding agreements.

 

Other:

• Develop an annual work plan that includes clear projected results for the year and is consistent with TEC’s mission, vision and strategic plan.
• Participate in monthly check-ins with your supervisor, periodically report progress towards annual results to your supervisor, and participate in an annual performance review of self and other staff.
• Participate in regular staff meetings, as your schedule and weekly hours allow.
• Provide vacation coverage for your supervisor, as needed.
• Complete timekeeping, activity and financial reports and other reporting requirements necessary to comply with contracts, grants and other funding agreements, as directed by your supervisor.
• Act consistent with “How We Roll @ TEC: Our Team Charter” in all aspects of your work at TEC.
• Work cooperatively and constructively with all TEC staff, TEC Board of Directors, TEC member groups and other TEC partners and volunteers to support the success of the organization and achieve our mission, strategic plan and program goals, enable efficient decision-making, and maintain positive morale.
• Preform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: PREFERRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND SKILLS:

• Working knowledge of natural sciences including: field ecology, plant biology, stream and aquatic ecology, wildlife ecology, and geology
• Working knowledge of learning styles and instructional strategies for youth (K-12)
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Understanding of sustainability and a passion to teach youth (K-12)
• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a natural science or education discipline.
• Two or more years experience teaching K-12 youth, in formal and/or informal settings, especially 5th grade through 8th grade.
• Work well independently and within a small group
• Demonstrated leadership qualities

 

COMPENSATION:

This is a part‐time, seasonal position (24-32 hours/week) with occasional evening and/or weekend work required. Hourly wage range is $15 to $19 per hour, commensurate with experience. Benefits include medical, dental, retirement and flexible scheduling.
