So Much White: Is it Snow or Snow Geese
Each spring over 200,000 Snow and Ross’s Geese migrate through the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. For the past sixteen years, Kelly Hazen has volunteered her time to study Ross’s and Snow Geese as they rest and feed at Malheur during their northbound migration. She has read the neck collars of over 1,700 Snow and Ross’s Geese thus contributing to understanding adult survival rates, migration timing, and migration patterns. Join Kelly to learn about the identifying features of these species, including their rare Blue Phase type. Also, learn how to read neck collars and study fascinating details about these long distance migrating geese.
The program begins at 6:30 PM at the Environmental Center, 16 NW Kansas in Bend for social time and treats. A discussion covering local birding and birding events begins at 7:00 PM, with Kelly Hazen’s talk from 7:30 to 8:30. ECAS members, friends, neighbors and Central Oregon visitors are all welcome.
