SUMMARY:Stand up for Energy Affordability
DESCRIPTION:We’re holding a public hearing to tell the Oregon Public Utility Commission to protect families from a big gas rate hike proposed by Cascade Natural Gas. Cascade wants to raise home gas bills by 17.4%\, which could push the average winter bill up to $135\, right when people need heat the most. At a time when many Oregon families are already struggling to pay their energy bills\, this increase would make things even harder. Cascade is also spending money to grow the gas system and invest in costly renewable natural gas projects that may not help everyday households. We believe families should not have to pay more for risky investments and shareholder profits that clearly don’t benefit our community.

SUMMARY:Seeing the Forest Through the Trees—A Guide to Low Carbon Buildings
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 1 in Bend\, Oregon\, for a special event focused on a crucial part of the growing demand for housing in Deschutes County\, one of the fastest-growing counties in the state. At this event\, Energy Trust of Oregon’s latest Net Zero Fellow\, Jeff Stern of LEVER Architecture\, will explore the relationship between energy efficiency and building materials on the path to zero-carbon buildings. He will discuss how these concepts shape material and assembly choices to achieve superior building performance while reducing environmental impact. \nThis event is also a great opportunity to have a dialogue with experts on the topic of mass timber and learn how you can apply to become our next Net Zero Fellow during our open application period. Stick around after the event for an opportunity to network with catered snacks. \nBased on his impactful new report\, “Seeing the Forest Through the Trees—A Guide to Low Carbon Buildings\,” Jeff will discuss: \n\nOptimal approaches for different building types to reduce whole-building carbon\nFeasibility of zero-carbon buildings in the current building climate\nComparisons of exterior building assemblies designed to meet Passive House standards for wood stick framed and mass timber\, plus comparisons of embodied carbon and much more\nThree case studies that address various building types\, including affordable townhomes\, rental apartments and a Black Business Hub with retail and office space
