SUMMARY:OSU-Cascades Science Pub: Mapping War Zones via Satellite
DESCRIPTION:Join Jamon Lee Van Den Hoek\, Associate Professor in OSU’s College of Earth\, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences\, for a guest lecture on mapping conflict zones with satellite at the November Science Pub. \nIn war torn areas\, physical damage can be immense and reporting of it inconsistent or worse\, unreliable. Learn how Jamon Van Den Hoek and his team in the Conflict Ecology Lab use open satellite data to monitor damage caused by armed conflict and to develop new approaches to map refugee movements and assess environmental and climatic change in politically fragile contexts around the globe. The lab’s maps and data covering the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine have been published in the New York Times\, BBC\, Al Jazeera and other major global news outlets. \n\nFood Provided (Heavy hors d’oeuvers prepared by OSU-Cascades EDGE Catering No-host bar with beer\, cider\, wine and non-alcoholic beverages)\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Science Pub: Fungi in the Forest
DESCRIPTION:Explore the variety of fungi in Central Oregon and the surprisingly important role they play in forest health. You’ll discover the vast fungal communication networks in forests at boot-level and beneath\, how fungi are adapted to our fire-dependent environment\, and how they can help forests recover from fire. \nYou’ll also learn about the largest fungus in the world\, located nearby in the Malheur National Forest. \nAbout the Presenter \nAriel Cowan is an assistant professor of practice and regional fire specialist with the OSU Extension Service in Deschutes County. Cowan’s experience in mycology began at the State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science & Forestry. Since then\, as a biologist\, researcher\, stewardship forester and wildland firefighter her work has focused on fungal ecology and forest health. She is a member of the Central Oregon Mushroom Club. \nRegister here!
