Make Your School Sustainable

School RecyclingSchools can serve as sustainable learning labs and model. Students who are eager to learn how they can have a positive impact on the planet are encouraged through student-led and mentor-supported Green Teams. We also assist schools in applying for Oregon Green Schools recognition.

Bend-La Pine Schools

The Environmental Center partners with Bend-La Pine Schools for their Sustainability Coordinator position. The Sustainability Coordinator sends out a monthly EarthSmart E-newsletter to staff, coordinates the District Sustainability Committee, supports teachers and green teams, and works at the District level on energy and waste conservation initiatives. Visit the Bend-La Pine Schools Sustainability webpage.

Green Teams at Local Schools

School Green TeamMany students are eager green champions. Miller Elementary reported 150 applicants for their green team in 2013! The Environmental Center nurtures these young environmental stewards by helping to form and support green teams in their schools. We train parent or community mentors and pair them with interested teachers to lead the green teams. Most green teams work toward Oregon Green School Certification (see below), while others make a difference in their schools using their own format.

If you are interested in setting up a green team at your school, or supporting a student green team as an adult mentor, please email Jackie Wilson

Oregon Green Schools

Oregon Green School AwardOregon Green School is a non-profit dedicated to energizing and engaging students through student-driven activities that advance their understanding and ownership of sustainability.  The Environmental Center serves as the regional coordinator for this State-wide program. We assist Bend-La Pine Schools with conducting waste audits, providing grant opportunities, and recommending and presenting curriculum resources.

If you are interested in becoming an Oregon Green school, email the regional coordinator Jackie Wilson for our local application materials. For more information and for tools to help in the certification process, visit the OGS Website.
