Tourist Destinations are Rethinking Waste
Launching our latest pilot project
We are excited to announce that we are partnering with Campfire Hotel, Mt. Bachelor Village, Tetherow Resort, The Bird’s Nest Airbnb, High Desert Museum, and the Visit Central Oregon Visitor Information Center to help visitors rethink waste!
You might have heard that Deschutes County has over 4.3 million visitors annually! That’s a lot of extra people who produce waste and may practice different recycling habits while enjoying their vacations. Over the next few months, we will work with these six visitor destinations across Deschutes County to track waste data, implement reduce and reuse practices, improve recycling infrastructure, and provide staff trainings and visitor education materials.
We are thankful for sponsorship from Visit Central Oregon and support for waste data collection from Cascade Disposal and Republic Services!
Project timeline:
- Jan-Feb 2022 Pre-Waste Audit: We will work with local haulers to establish a baseline of your property’s overall waste and contamination rates.
- Feb-Mar 2022 Consultation: We will conduct a site visit to get an idea of your property’s existing practices and recommend custom strategies for reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost you can consider implementing.
- Mar-May 2022 Implementation: We will provide up to $1,000 for you to implement recommended strategies.
- Sep-Aug 2022 Post-Waste Audit: We will work with local haulers to measure success by gathering your property’s overall waste and contamination rates.
