SUMMARY:Community Conversations-Natural Resource Management
DESCRIPTION:Registration is required. Light supper provided. \nPlease join us in a discussion about our Natural Resources – What are the current conditions\, current concerns\, and how can you play a role. Let’s ask ourselves…what can one person do? Envision a community that understands the upstream and downstream impacts of using Earth’s resources and makes responsible decisions about the consumption \nPresented by the Bitterbrush Broads and Bros\, the Central Oregon chapter and The Environmental Center \nCommunity Conversations brings neighbors together to connect\, share experiences\, and listen with open minds. Through thoughtfully facilitated events\, we provide opportunities for individuals with diverse beliefs to engage in meaningful dialogue\, explore different perspectives\, and discover common ground on the issues that shape our community. Our goal is to foster deeper understanding\, stronger relationships\, and collaborative solutions to local civic challenges. Together\, we cultivate the trust and communication skills essential for a thriving and united Central Oregon. \nQuestions? Contact lizg@deschuteslibrary.org

SUMMARY:Community Craft Swap and Share
DESCRIPTION:Share your unused craft supplies\, and find something new \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s winter: a time to get cozy\, stay inside\, and be crafty. If you’re creative and curious\, you may have craft supplies from many forgotten hobbies hiding under a bed or in a closet. Clear them out and bring them to the library! The thing that you’re done with and over\, might be the exact thing someone else wants to try out. Chat with other crafters\, and maybe learn something new. \nWe will have crafters-in-residence who can answer questions about crafting\, getting started\, or problem solving. Topics may include hand-stitching\, English paper piecing\, sewing and more. \nWe encourage you to bring clean\, usable supplies. Please no broken tools or unusable items. This will be more of a share than a strict swap: individuals may donate their items\, then select that which they feel is equitable in return. \nThis is an all ages program\, everyone is welcome. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:"Shark Heart" in Real Life - The Science of Studying Sharks-Sisters Library
DESCRIPTION:Learn about sharks and current research with Dr. Alexandra McInturf. \nSharks play a critical role in maintaining vibrant ecosystems in Oregon and around the world. Yet\, considered “dangerous” by popular media and threatened by human activity worldwide\, these organisms have faced global population declines. Dr. Alexandra McInturf has been studying shark species worldwide for the last decade\, including those among the most vulnerable. As an animal behaviorist\, she researches some of the most understudied components of these organisms\, including their social behavior. In this presentation\, she will introduce some of the key characteristics of sharks (what makes a shark\, a shark)\, talk about shark diversity\, and finally discuss some of the projects she and other researchers are undertaking on different species (including white sharks) in the Big Fish Lab at Oregon State University.

SUMMARY:Know Stories - Tribal/Shared History: Reflection & Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Laurie Danzuka shares tribal history\, impacts on public education\, engaging with tribal students/families\, and indigenous ways of living. She will also share current issues facing tribes and their members. All these topics center around treaties\, ceded lands\, tribal lifeways\, cultural restoration\, and language revitalization. \nLaurie has been an education advocate for preschool to post-secondary education for the past 20+ years. She grew up\, went to school\, raised her family\, and presently lives on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. She believes there can be a balance in tribal education and public education rather than choosing one over the other. Laurie is sharing her story through life experiences and from her personal lens and perspective. She shares to create understanding and to address common misconceptions.
