SUMMARY:BEYOND THE BEYOND: PREPARING BEND FOR A WILD FUTURE
DESCRIPTION:How will our city and our lives be changed by population growth\, a warming world\, hotter summers and less water\, new technologies and other emerging trends? And how can we plan to maintain our region’s beauty and quality of life? \nBeing resilient and seeking out opportunities to innovate is what moved Oregon into the forefront of planning 50 years ago and it’s what we strive to be far into the future. Come learn how planning will need to change in future decades with case studies on transforming traditional suburbs\, developing new models for infrastructure planning\, and building resiliency in an era of climate-driven events — and what we can do to retain the best of Bend as it moves into a wild future. \nAdmission is FREE but due to space constraints\, pre-registration is required. Doors will open at 6:30pm and the program starts at 7pm. A no-host bar will be available. \n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR FREE\n\n\n\n\n\nTHIS IS PART 3 OF A THREE-PART SERIES CELEBRATING OREGON’S LAND USE LAWS. YOU CAN VIEW PART 1 AND PART 2 HERE.

SUMMARY:Alder Springs Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join Central Oregon LandWatch for a moderate to strenuous walk down into the scenic lower Whychus Creek Canyon to Alder Springs. We will check out the confluence of the creek with the thundering Deschutes River below a towering wedge of rimrock on this premier Central Oregon hike. \nWatch for wildflowers\, raptors\, songbirds\, lizards\, and rattlesnakes enjoying the last bit of summer. This western portion of the Crooked River National Grassland is part of a mosaic of public and private lands that Central Oregon LandWatch is working to protect as important wildlife habitat\, winter range\, and a migration corridor between the Cascades and the Ochocos. \nThe drive from Bend to the trailhead is about 1 hour\, the last few miles of which are on a rough dirt road – high clearance\, 4WD strongly recommended. Please volunteer to drive if you have a rig that can handle this. \nThe approximately 6 mile round-trip hike is moderately to strenuous\, with a fair amount of elevation loss on the way out and gain on the way back. The hike can get hot and dusty. Bring: sun sauce\, bug sauce\, hiking boots\, shades\, a hat\, lunch\, and plenty of water. \nWe will meet in Bend at 9:00am for the carpool. All attendees will be asked to pitch in for gas. \nPlease note: As is often the case for hikers in this area\, we may encounter rattlesnakes on this hike.

SUMMARY:Lookout Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Sign up now for a moderate to strenuous hike up Lookout Mountain on Sunday\, July 10th with Central Oregon Landwatch. This will be a beautiful hike with scenic views of Big Summit Prairie and stunning views of the Cascades.  If it’s a clear day we might see Snow Mountain and the Strawberry Mountains to the east. \nAmy Stuart (former Deschutes Watershed Manager) and Greg Jackle (Ochoco District Wildlife Biologist) will guide us and share their expertise in wildlife issues and lead discussions on how the Off-Highway Vehicle trail proposal in the Ochocos could impact deer\, elk\, and redband trout. In addition to our hike leaders\, our board president “The Nathan” will be along to increase the fun factor and help us identify birds and their songs. \nThis is rated as a MODERATE to STRENUOUS hike\, approximately 4.5 miles in distance with an elevation gain of 1\,220 feet. The summit is 6926 ft of elevation. We will be bush whacking out across open country and meadows and through a few stringer stands to avoid all the blow down that fire crews haven’t been able to get to this year. \nSign up here \nWhen: Meet in Bend for carpool at 7:30am Sunday\, July 10th\, return by mid-afternoon (more details for registrants)\nWhere: Lookout Mountain in the Ochoco National Forest\nHow: Sign up here\nWhy: Get out in nature with us and learn more about our programs!
