Bend Area Habitat ReStore Renews Former Backstrom Builders Center

Jan 21, 2014 -

Since its purchase of the property in October, Habitat has been designing a project that emphasizes environmental stewardship in all aspects of the renovation.

Thus far in the demolition phase, Habitat has salvaged reusable lumber, metal roofing and other building materials that will be used in the development of the new 18,000 square foot store. More details of the extent of the recycling effort will be revealed at the event.

On Thursday, January 30th at 11am at 224 NE Thurston in Bend, Bend Area Habitat will display the salvaged materials, unveil the new ReStore sign on Hwy 97, and conduct virtual tours of what the new ReStore will look like when it opens this summer.

To help us attain our goal of recycling and rebuilding in a timely and affordable manner, volunteers have contributed more than 600 hours deconstructing, cleaning, and recycling materials from the new ReStore property.

Mark Quinlan, Executive Director, says “Moving our ReStore is motivated by two primary factors that are both important to the community. We have outgrown our current store and want to improve the shopping experience for our thousands of customers and donors. And secondly an enhanced and expanded store will increase Habitat’s ability to finance affordable home construction and repairs for low-income families.”
