Embedding sustainability into daily life in Central Oregon

We need volunteers to help us year-round with a variety of activities, from office projects to mentoring student gresean-easly-3en teams at local schools to getting your hands dirty in our Kansas Avenue Learning Garden. Many of our 35 member groups—other environmental organizations active in Central Oregon—need volunteer help as well.

Current Volunteer Needs

Bend Open Streets- September 17th

Bend Open Streets, an initiative of Commute Options, will celebrate Bend’s largest public space – our streets and roadways. This event will close streets to automobile traffic so people can walk, ride bikes and play in the streets. Commute Options needs to recruit over 100 volunteers for this event! Volunteers will help with intersection management, providing water along the route, or helping with evaluation and data collection. You’ll receive a t-shirt and a free drink from Barrel Thief at the after-party! Sign up here.

*BONUS!* When you sign-up to volunteer, note in the comments section that you heard about this opportunity from The Environmental Center. We will receive $10 per volunteer recruited!

Or… help out in our booth!

Guardians at Earth Day

Do you remember seeing our large Guardian puppets at the Earth Day Fair in April? We’d like to bring them to Bend Open Streets – but we need a few willing volunteers to be puppeteers. During the event, you’d interact with community members, pose for photos, and spark conversations around sustainable community. We will provide training ahead of time to get familiar with the Guardians. If this sounds like fun, please email Lauren or call 541-385-6908 X18.

Green Tour- September 30th

The Energy Challenge is gearing up for the 17th Annual Green Tour – a special event that allows community members to see first-hand how to save energy at home. From energy retrofits to new construction, our Green Tour offers information to help everyone save energy. We need volunteers to help us share the latest information on home performance, solar, efficient building, electric vehicles and more. No prior green building knowledge or experience is required! All volunteers will be asked to attend a training session prior to September 30th.

Volunteers can sign up for one of two shifts: 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided and volunteers will be recognized at the after-party (with food and drinks to thank you for your time, of course). To learn more and sign up, email Ani or call (541) 385-6908 X26.

Outreach: Recycling Education

We have an opportunity to help our community recycle plastics that typically aren’t accepted in our community. Volunteers are needed to educate our community on recycling and to facilitate a new collection drive in Bend. Tentative time frame would be each Saturday in September from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. (Date/time can be flexible.) We’re really looking for a few go-getters who are comfortable talking with others and sharing recycling knowledge! We will provide training and support to get you started. To learn more about this opportunity, email Denise or call 541-385-6908 X14.
