SUMMARY:High Desert Speaker Series Bend: Supervolcanoes & Flood Basalts
DESCRIPTION:ONDA is kicking off the 2019 Bend High Desert Speaker Series on January 15\, with geologist Daniele McKay presenting on high desert supervolcanoes and flood basalts. From massive caldera eruptions to lava flows that can be found throughout the state\, Oregon’s volcanic history has played an important role in shaping the stunning landscapes and waterways of the high desert. Come to learn about how geologic events have created the awe-inspiring wild places ONDA works to protect. \n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto courtesy of Greg Burke \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speaker \nDaniele is a geology instructor at the University of Oregon and is based in Bend. She studies volcanic activity and has focused much of her research on central Oregon volcanoes. When Daniele isn’t leading students into the field and sharing her research in the classroom\, you might find her hiking\, skiing or teaching other community members about the incredible volcanic landscapes that surround us. \nThe event will take place at Worthy Brewing’s Hop Mahal room at 495 NE Bellevue Drive in Bend. The event is free and open to the public\, but space is limited and registration is required. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the speaker beginning at 7 p.m. For more information about other speakers in this series\, visit ONDA.org/speakerseries

SUMMARY:The American Conversation: Talking Across Political Lines
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Elizabeth Marino will give an overview of how different individuals and communities view risk\, and what is risky\, based on foundational worldviews and cultural values. Divergent risk assessments can translate into how communities view and act on issues such as conservation or climate change. This presentation will give specific examples of how background values affect how we talk about the environment\, with suggestions for moving forward to form community cohesion around maintaining relationships with the places we hold dear. \nPresented by Elizabeth Marino\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Prof. of Anthropology\, Co-Director\, Laboratory for the American Conversation\, OSU-Cascades. \nFree and open to the public!
