DESCRIPTION:Join the Nature Center for two full days of playing with clay! Clay is a wonderful\, expressive\, and tactile art medium. In this class\, nature sculptor Rick Braithwaite will teach you the basics of representing animal life with clay. Learn the fundamentals of nature sculpture\, from basic forming\, anatomy and proportions to finishing textures and personality. Sculpting will be based off images of animals or one of the Nature Center’s resident raptors. Through this class you will learn to use techniques and your own creativity create your own unique piece of nature art. \nThe cost of the class includes all materials. \nCost: $75 **Price Discounted**\nA simple lunch is provided on Saturday (bring a bag lunch on Sunday). DESCRIPTION:When you think of living more sustainably\, do clucking chickens\, pucker-inducing pickles\, or muddy feet sloshing in a pit of building clay come to mind? \nThey’re just a few of the things attendees can experience at the Mother Earth News Fair June 6-7 at the Linn County Expo Center\, 3700 Knox Butte Road E. The Fair runs 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday\, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. \nFairgoers can participate in several activities throughout the weekend\, including: \nLive Poultry Processing: Organic farmer Joel Salatin and Featherman Equipment’s David Schafer will show how to harvest chickens humanely\, safely and efficiently\, regardless of the number of birds to be processed. 9:30 – 11 a.m. Sunday only \nDo-It-Yourself Pickling Station: The Fermenters Club will guide fairgoers through the steps involved in making their own batch of fermented vegetables to take home. The club provides the jar and all ingredients. \nBuilding with Mud and Straw: The Natural Cottage Project will teach attendees how to mix building clay and straw with their feet and sculpt a miniature earthen house by hand. \nPlanting in Small Spaces: Nichols Garden Nursery will plant containers of vegetables and discuss the varieties suitable for small-space gardening. \nSpinning 101: Dianne Wright from Wandering Pines Ranch will provide a brief history of spinning\, and spins on either a drop spindle or a wheel. \nKids Building a Mini Wind Turbine: Kids can build their own mini wind turbine and measure the voltage it generates\, with help from the Renewable Energy Technology Program at Columbia Gorge Community College. \nMaking Seed Balls: Attendees can hone their seed ball-making technique with Southern Exposure Seed Exchange\, and take home seed balls for guerrilla gardening. 10 a.m. daily \nIn addition\, the Fair will offer more than 150 hands-on workshops on organic gardening\, cooking and food preservation\, renewable energy\, homesteading\, small-scale livestock\, green building\, natural health\, green transportation\, and related topics. Local and national experts will lead the sessions. \nAttendees can also find children’s activities; country skills; vendor and livestock demonstrations; more than 300 vendors; and local and organic food options. \nWeekend passes cost $15 in advance and $25 at the gate. SUMMARY:Lookout Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Sign up now for a moderate to strenuous hike up Lookout Mountain on Sunday\, July 10th with Central Oregon Landwatch. This will be a beautiful hike with scenic views of Big Summit Prairie and stunning views of the Cascades.  If it’s a clear day we might see Snow Mountain and the Strawberry Mountains to the east. \nAmy Stuart (former Deschutes Watershed Manager) and Greg Jackle (Ochoco District Wildlife Biologist) will guide us and share their expertise in wildlife issues and lead discussions on how the Off-Highway Vehicle trail proposal in the Ochocos could impact deer\, elk\, and redband trout. In addition to our hike leaders\, our board president “The Nathan” will be along to increase the fun factor and help us identify birds and their songs. \nThis is rated as a MODERATE to STRENUOUS hike\, approximately 4.5 miles in distance with an elevation gain of 1\,220 feet. The summit is 6926 ft of elevation. SUMMARY:Faces of Farming Family Fun Day
DESCRIPTION:The day will begin at Oregon’s first urban farm\, Fields Farms with hosts Jim and Debbie Fields. Jim\, known to many as the godfather of farming in Central Oregon\, will lead you on a tour of his wonderful property. \nTours will begin at 11:00am\, 12:00pm and 1:00pm. Please arrive on time. \nChildren and their parents/caregivers will be invited to plant their own sprout in the “Farming for the Future” garden\, a tribute to the critical role that local food cultivation plays in our evolution and sustainability as a society. Plus\, it’s fun to get your hands dirty! \nEl Sancho will be onsite to serve up a yummy lunch. The menu will include signature tacos featuring local meats and veggies plus quesadillas for the small ones. (Lunch available for purchase) \nNext\, families will travel 5 miles east to Juniper Jungle Permaculture Farm where they will learn about bees\, honey\, pollination and the critical role bees play in the maintenance of a local food ecosystem. \nChris Casad\, owner of Juniper Jungle Permaculture Farm\, and staff show you around the farm. \nTours will begin at 12:00pm\, 1:00pm and 2:00pm. Please arrive on time. \nChildren will see where the bees live and will be invited to make their own beeswax candles to take home. DESCRIPTION:Hydroponics\, or growing plants in a nutrient solution root medium\, is a growing area of local food production. Learn about the state-of-the-art techniques for producing food in a controlled\, soilless setting. \nLearn firsthand about one of our regions newest methods of farming. Hydroponic farming allows for amazing season extension and increased yields. This very well may be the future of farming in Central Oregon. \nJoin us for the rare opportunity to visit not only one\, but two of the regions largest producers and receive first-hand tours from the hydroculturists themselves\, Ryan of The Next Season Farm and Jessica of Tender Greens. \nThe hydroponic journey will begin at The Next Season Farm\, in Tumalo with tours beginning at 12pm\, 1pm and 2pm.  \nNext\, travel down the road a couple miles to Tender Greens hydroculture farm where tours will be provided at 1pm\, 2pm and 3pm. \nAddy Macs ice cream truck will be on site to provide an afternoon treat. \nComplete your hydroponic journey by touring the Worthy Gardens at Worthy Brewing Company. Tours at 4pm\, 5pm and 6pm. Enjoy a half-price beer as part of the Faces of Farming tour.
