SUMMARY:Deschutes County Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Senator Jeff Merkley is hosting his 18th digital town hall of the year — and 450th since first being elected to the Senate. Senator Jeff Merkley\, invites all Deschutes County residents to join online\, on mobile devices\, or on the telephone to discuss what we need to do to strengthen our state and our nation. \nOn a computer\, smartphone or tablet: click here\nOn the phone: \nCall 669-254-5252 \nEnter meeting ID: 160 544 9836 \nEner participant ID: # \nEnter access code: 41220350

SUMMARY:Green Team Movie Night: Vanishing of the Bees
DESCRIPTION:From http://www.vanishingbees.com/synopsis/  \nHoneybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet\, literally vanishing from their hives. \nKnown as Colony Collapse Disorder\, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples\, broccoli\, watermelon\, onions\, cherries and a hundred other fruits and vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every three bites of food on our tables. \nVanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. The film explores the struggles they face as the two friends plead their case on Capital Hill and travel across the Pacific Ocean in the quest to protect their honeybees. \nFilming across the US\, in Europe\, Australia and Asia\, this documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between mankind and mother earth. As scientists puzzle over the cause\, organic beekeepers indicate alternative reasons for this tragic loss. Conflicting options abound and after years of research\, a definitive answer has not been found to this harrowing mystery. \nThe film is narrated by Ellen Page.

SUMMARY:Grannies (and Friends) Against Bullies - Public Rally
DESCRIPTION:Central Oregon Bitterbrush Broads\, Great Old Broads for Wilderness \nGrannies (and Friends) Against BULLIES — A Public Rally in support of OUR PUBLIC LANDS\nPLEASE JOIN the Friends of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and the Great Old Broads for Wilderness to send a message to the armed militia trying to steal Malheur Wildlife Refuge: “get out\, go home\, and give the public back its wildlife refuge.” \nSpeakers include Alice Elshoff\, a board member of the Friends and Julie Weikel\, a Harney County resident who participated in the process to develop a Comprehensive Conservation Plan for Malheur National Wildlife Refuge that included local ranchers and won a national award. \nRally organizers believe PUBLIC LANDS are part of AMERICA’S HERITAGE and the government must enforce the laws that protect our public lands. These laws should be evaluated through a democratic process\, not through bullying\, intimidation\, and armed anarchy. \nTo RSVP CLICK HERE.

SUMMARY:Facing Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:The apocalyptic story of the current climate crisis is nothing new. What is new is the research emerging on why we have failed to act. Social psychologists have recently identified some of the reasons behind the inertia caused by fear\, guilt\, anger\, despair and helplessness. These are the emotions experienced by the very individuals ⎯you and I⎯ in whose hands it lies to make the necessary changes that will enrich our lives\, make us more resilient\, restore self-‐identity\, strengthen our communities\, and ensure a livable planet both for ourselves and our more-‐than-‐human relatives. Join us on Monday nights to share and contribute towards this critical shift in consciousness. \nBased on Living Systems Theory\, “The Work That Reconnects\,” Deep Ecology and ancient spiritual traditions\, the class is guided by long-‐time activist/filmmaker/yoga instructor\, Vanessa Schulz.

SUMMARY:High Desert Speaker Series: Sagebrush Sisters
DESCRIPTION:Last June\, three stalwart Oregonian women – hale and hearty despite their combined 200 and some odd years – hiked more than 50 miles along the pronghorn antelope migration route between Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada and Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge in Oregon. The goal: fulfill a shared lifelong dream to raise awareness about the sagebrush stronghold and critical wildlife habitat that is the land between. \nThe Oregon Natural Desert Association’s High Desert Speaker Series returns to Bend on January 19th at 7pm with the short film Sagebrush Sisters\, a documentary about that hike\, and a panel discussion with the three hikers moderated by ONDA’s Greater Hart-Sheldon Region Coordinator Jeremy Austin. \nDoors open at 6:30pm at the Old Stone Church in downtown Bend. Sagebrush Sisters: Hiking the Greater Hart-Sheldon Region chronicles the journey of Alice Elshoff\, then 80\, of Bend\, Julie Weikel\, 68\, of Princeton\, and Helen Harbin\, 65\, of Bend. The event is free and open to the public\, and guests are asked to reserve their seats. \nHelp spread the word on Facebook!

SUMMARY:This Changes Everything\, the film
DESCRIPTION:Climate champions Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis explore the premise that climate peril is not about carbon\, it’s about capitalism.  Can we dominate nature\, take what we want\, and never pay the consequences?  Can we use the climate crisis to transform our failed economic system into something radically better? This film explores communities on the front lines of global warming\, challenges entrenched policies\, and considers how we can work with nature for a more just\, sustainable economy and planet. \n“Klein and Lewis paint a picture of a post-fossil-fueled\, post-capitalist future that seems not only within reach\, but like a place where we actually want to live.” – YES Magazine \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n$5 donation at the door.

SUMMARY:Locavore Food School Presents: Beginning Beekeeping for 2016
DESCRIPTION:Central Oregon Locavore proudly hosts the “Locavore Food School” program that is the culmination of many nutritionally-minded volunteers and community members including doctors\, nurses\, nutritionists\, chefs and alternative health care practitioners. Locavore’s Food School brings you monthly installments of nutrition and cooking classes. \nLearn How to Become a Phenomenal Backyard Beekeeper in 2016!\nThe class is intended for those looking to begin beekeeping this spring and for those considering taking up the hobby but seeking additional information.   We will go over some fun facts about bees\, cover equipment needs and the parts of a bee hive\, basic bee biology\, the various bee races\, when to start your hive\, where to place it\, where to get bees and the costs. This is the time of year to be thinking about bees\, as they are generally all sold out in the spring when one starts looking to get started! \nA brief overview of the threat mites are to bees\, and the topic of whether or not to treat (use chemicals in the hive) for mites will also be introduced. \nAbout Ron and Carolyn \nWe have been in central Oregon since 1977 and we each have educational backgrounds in the biological sciences.  The years of living here have taught my wife and I the ins and outs of successful gardening in central Oregon.  (Carolyn spent many years working for Doug at the Redmond Greenhouse before it closed)  We both enjoy working our large organic garden and though not official via taking classes\, Carolyn is certainly a master organic gardener in her own right.  You would not believe what she produces here in the high desert of central Oregon.  We work together but I tend more to the fruit trees\, grapes and berries while she focuses on the garden.  It’s through our organic gardening experience that we became interested in beekeeping and this season will be our eighth year of keeping bees.

SUMMARY:COTA Movie Night - Off The Beaten Path
DESCRIPTION:OFF THE BEATEN PATH – A Fatbike Film\nOld. St Francis School Theater\n9p.m. | $5 per person\, cash only | Minors accompanied by parent or guardian\n\nFatback Bikes and Pine Mountain Sports are rolling out our 2016 Central Oregon Trail Alliance Movie Night @ McMenamins series with a new fatbike film! We’ll kick off the new year with OFF THE BEATEN PATH at COTA Movie Night on Thu Jan 21! \nOff The Beaten Path shows that fatbiking is somewhat of a natural progression of mountain biking. Early mountain bikers were looking to create bikes that allowed them to ride on terrain and in conditions they otherwise wouldn’t be able to. Many now look to fat bikes for the same reason. \nProduced by First Track Productions\, Off The Beaten Path features a unique cast of characters and imagery of huge-tired bikes riding in places bicycles have never been. Shot in lots of beautiful locations\, their riding surface includes snow\, ice\, sand\, water\, rock\, pavement and… lots of big air! \nCome join us at McMenamins! We’ll have Fuzzy John Mylne in attendance and Bend-based Fatback fatbikes on display in the theater. \nMovie Night at McMenamins raises funds and awareness for Central Oregon Trail Alliance. This January Movie Night will designate all funds from the door be used for fatbike-specific trails in Central Oregon!

SUMMARY:Green Drinks at G5
DESCRIPTION:Every other month\, The Environmental Center and our Green Spot business partners host Green Drinks – a networking event with a mix of business and community members. \nTo kick off 2016\, we’ll be heading over to the downtown offices of G5\, a leading provider of digital marketing effectiveness in the property management sector. We’ll chat about some challenges larger organizations face and solutions to help you save energy and reduce waste regardless of these scenarios. \nG5 is located at 550 NW Franklin Ave.\, Suite 200. Head up to the second floor to the main lobby and we’ll meet you there! \nThe event will be in collaboration with Humm Kombucha\, who will be giving away an awesome raffle prize near the end of the evening. Don’t miss out! \n  \nGreen Drinks is an international concept and is an enjoyable way to network\, learn about local businesses and their sustainability efforts\, and have an eco-conscious drink or two!  Bring your own cup and consider carpooling\, walking\, biking or transit to get to the event!
