SUMMARY:Green Drinks
DESCRIPTION:Please RSVP in advance! \nRSVP \n\nYou helped us to get the Climate Action Resolution passed\, and now it’s time to weigh in on what goes into the Climate Action Plan.\nThe City of Bend and the Climate Action Steering Committee (CASC) are asking for your input on how to address climate change. Come learn more at our first Green Drinks event of 2019! \nPublic working groups have identified potential climate action strategies\, and now there’s a survey available in order to gather community input. The survey will outline some of the new programs and policies that the CASC is considering to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Bend\, and allow respondents to share which they support the most. \nTake the survey here: go.participate.online/BendClimateSurvey\n(Available through Feb 3rd\, and we’ll have iPads at the event if you want to complete it on-site.)\nOur work did not wrap up when the Climate Action Resolution was passed. In fact\, it’s just getting started! Share your ideas to help shape the plan that will define our climate legacy. \nThanks to Deschutes Brewery for hosting this event at the downtown pub. We’ll be joined by the City of Bend’s Sustainability Coordinator and members of the CASC to help answer questions and guide discussion.

SUMMARY:“The Beaver Believers” Film Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:The Beaver Believers is a feature documentary that tells the urgent yet whimsical story of an unlikely cadre of activists — a biologist\, a hydrologist\, a botanist\, an ecologist\, a psychologist\, and a hairdresser — who share a common vision: restoring the North American beaver to the watersheds of the American West. The Beaver Believers encourage us to embrace a new paradigm for managing our western lands\, one that seeks to partner with the natural world rather than overpower it. Shot in eight western U.S. states\, Mexico and Canada\, through desert drought\, raging wildfires\, spring floods and wetland serenity\, this film will change the way you think about climate change and inspire you to take a bite out of the challenges we face\, one stick at a time. Join us for a screening of The Beaver Believers followed by Q&A with the filmmaker\, Sarah Koenigsberg. \nDoors open at 6:00 pm. Film starts at 7:00 pm. Event ends at 8:45 pm.\nNo-host bar. Museum café will be open from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm.\n$10\, Members receive 20 % discount \nRSVP here – pre-payment required.

SUMMARY:High Desert Speaker Series Bend: Supervolcanoes & Flood Basalts
DESCRIPTION:ONDA is kicking off the 2019 Bend High Desert Speaker Series on January 15\, with geologist Daniele McKay presenting on high desert supervolcanoes and flood basalts. From massive caldera eruptions to lava flows that can be found throughout the state\, Oregon’s volcanic history has played an important role in shaping the stunning landscapes and waterways of the high desert. Come to learn about how geologic events have created the awe-inspiring wild places ONDA works to protect. \n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto courtesy of Greg Burke \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speaker \nDaniele is a geology instructor at the University of Oregon and is based in Bend. She studies volcanic activity and has focused much of her research on central Oregon volcanoes. When Daniele isn’t leading students into the field and sharing her research in the classroom\, you might find her hiking\, skiing or teaching other community members about the incredible volcanic landscapes that surround us. \nThe event will take place at Worthy Brewing’s Hop Mahal room at 495 NE Bellevue Drive in Bend. The event is free and open to the public\, but space is limited and registration is required. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the speaker beginning at 7 p.m. For more information about other speakers in this series\, visit ONDA.org/speakerseries

SUMMARY:The American Conversation: Talking Across Political Lines
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Elizabeth Marino will give an overview of how different individuals and communities view risk\, and what is risky\, based on foundational worldviews and cultural values. Divergent risk assessments can translate into how communities view and act on issues such as conservation or climate change. This presentation will give specific examples of how background values affect how we talk about the environment\, with suggestions for moving forward to form community cohesion around maintaining relationships with the places we hold dear. \nPresented by Elizabeth Marino\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Prof. of Anthropology\, Co-Director\, Laboratory for the American Conversation\, OSU-Cascades. \nFree and open to the public!

SUMMARY:A Clean Energy Future for Bend—Two Paths to 100% Renewable
DESCRIPTION:Bend is developing a community climate action plan to reduce local greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. That means taking a hard look at new sources of energy\, since the majority of the energy we use today is generated by burning fossil fuels. \nJoin us on January 29th for an engaging and thought-provoking discussion about two options that our community could use to rapidly transition to a low-carbon\, 100% renewable energy future. \nRSVP here—space is limited!\nCommunity Choice Aggregation is a tool available in California and several other states that allows a whole community to choose to buy their energy directly from renewable sources and have their utility deliver it. Recently\, Pacific Power has developed its own pathway for communities it serves to purchase renewable electricity directly from the utility. We’ll learn about both models\, the pros and the cons and the uncertainties for a community like Bend\, and give you a chance to ask your questions. \nSpeakers: \n\nShawn Marshall\, Executive Director\, LEAN Energy US\nMatthew Chancellor\, Regional Business Manager\, Pacific Power\n\nAgenda: \n\nNetworking: 5:00 to 5:30 pm\nPresentation + Q&A: 5:30 to 6:30\nNetworking and mingling with speakers: 6:30 to 7:00\n\nA big thanks to our sponsor\, Worthy Brewing.
