SUMMARY:A Natives Perspective on American Indian History
DESCRIPTION:When Europeans arrived in North America more than 500 years ago\, they brought with them different cultural customs which soon spread across the land\, causing great loss of life and disruption of indigenous lives and cultures. Politically\, the dominant European City-State model permeated the continent\, and indigenous people were essentially forced to sign treaties that constructed sovereign tribal nations that in many cases bore little relationship to the traditional social structure and alliances. \nPre-registration is requested\, but not required. Register on line at trinitybend.org/education.

SUMMARY:Alder Springs Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join Central Oregon LandWatch for a moderate to strenuous walk down into the scenic lower Whychus Creek Canyon to Alder Springs. We will check out the confluence of the creek with the thundering Deschutes River below a towering wedge of rimrock on this premier Central Oregon hike. \nWatch for wildflowers\, raptors\, songbirds\, lizards\, and rattlesnakes enjoying the last bit of summer. This western portion of the Crooked River National Grassland is part of a mosaic of public and private lands that Central Oregon LandWatch is working to protect as important wildlife habitat\, winter range\, and a migration corridor between the Cascades and the Ochocos. \nThe drive from Bend to the trailhead is about 1 hour\, the last few miles of which are on a rough dirt road – high clearance\, 4WD strongly recommended. Please volunteer to drive if you have a rig that can handle this. \nThe approximately 6 mile round-trip hike is moderately to strenuous\, with a fair amount of elevation loss on the way out and gain on the way back. The hike can get hot and dusty. Bring: sun sauce\, bug sauce\, hiking boots\, shades\, a hat\, lunch\, and plenty of water. \nWe will meet in Bend at 9:00am for the carpool. All attendees will be asked to pitch in for gas. \nPlease note: As is often the case for hikers in this area\, we may encounter rattlesnakes on this hike.

SUMMARY:Reframing the Urban Growth Debate
DESCRIPTION:SAVE THE DATE \n Reframing the Urban Growth Debate\, a presentation by Eben Fodor\, a professional community planning consultant.  \nThe current process of planning the Urban Growth Boundary will determine what kind of city Bend will become. This presentation by Eben Fodor will raise the bar for local dialogue on this topic by providing the best available information and data sources regarding planning and land use matters. It will challenge us to think critically and constructively when evaluating the common mythology that “all urban growth is good\,” and inform Bend’s decisions about how and where to grow without sacrificing our quality of life. \nWhere are You on the Growth Spectrum?\n(Quiz from Better\, Not Bigger by Eben Fodor) \n1) How much more traffic congestion would you like in your community? \na) There is already plenty of traffic\, thanks\nb) Just a little bit more\, please\nc) A whole lot more \n2) How much more air and water pollution would you prefer?\na) We have too much already\nb) Just a little more pollution\, please\nc) Give me toxic soup! \n3) How much more farmland and open space do you want to be developed?\na) It would be nice if we could save what we have left\nb) I suppose we have to sacrifice this land in the name of ‘progress’\nc) I can’t bear the sight of undeveloped land going to waste \n4) How much higher do you want your taxes to go?\na) For what I’m getting\, I think I’m paying enough already\nb) I’m happy to pay more\, even if I can’t see any benefits \n5) How much more of your local natural resources (fresh water\, electric power supply\, forests\, aggregate and minerals) do you want consumed?\na) I’d like to conserve our natural resources and use them as efficiently as possible\nb) We have to sacrifice our resources to create prosperity\nc) We should sell all our natural resources for a quick buck \nIf you answered “A” to one or more of these questions\, “Reframing the Urban Growth Debate” is for you!  \nPlease join us for a presentation by Eben Fodor\, author of Better\, Not Bigger – How To Take Control of Urban Growth and Improve Your Community.

SUMMARY:Bend Energy Challenge Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:There are a million reasons to love the Bend Energy Challenge. Five million reasons\, actually. \nYou may have seen our AmeriCorps NCCC team around the community lately\, perhaps at Springfest\, outside a local business\, or even on your own doorstep. They have been busy spreading the word about the Bend Energy Challenge\, Bend’s chance to win $5 million for local energy conservation projects. They’ve also been educating Bend\, providing easy tips and resources for lowering their own energy bills. However\, the AmeriCorps team leaves us May 22\, and we will be in need of new volunteers to fill their shoes! \nIf you are passionate about energy conservation\, the environment\, want to help people save money\, or just want to do your part to better Bend\, we could use your help. We need volunteers approximately once a month to go door-to-door\, table outside local businesses\, and work booths at festivals to continue informing people about the Energy Challenge and energy conservation. \nIf you’re interested\, there will be a 3-hour orientation for new volunteers on May 20th from 4PM-7PM at the Environmental Center. \nRSVP to Danielle Vogel at 309-202-5982 or danivogel0804@yahoo.com \nTo learn more about the Challenge\, visit www.bendenergychallenge.org. \nSnacks will be provided. We’ll see you there!
