DESCRIPTION:Registration for this Nature Night will open on February 22nd.\n\nWild Horses\, Wolves\, and Other Wildlife of the Warm Springs Indian Reservation\nThe Warm Springs Indian Reservation is a vast (640\,000 acres) and diverse landscape that is home to a wide range of wildlife. Join Deschutes Land Trust and Austin L. Smith\, Jr.\, the General Manager of the Branch of Natural Resources for the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs\, to take a closer look at wildlife and wildlife management on the Warm Springs Reservation. Smith will discuss the dynamics of managing populations of wildlife including wild horses\, wolves\, and the reintroduction efforts around bighorn sheep and mountain goats. Learn more about these animals and others as they adapt to climate change\, wildfire risk\, and the shift of predators within their habitats. \nThe Land Trust is working to make our events as accessible as possible. This event will feature: \n\nA free livestream option. Registration is required.\nAn ASL interpreter.\nAccessible parking\, a ramped entrance\, wheelchair seating\, restrooms\, water fountains\, and assisted listening devices at the Tower Theatre. Learn more.\nPlease let us know at least one week in advance if there is something we can do or provide to support you in participating in this event to the fullest and we will accommodate as possible.\n\nAbout Austin Smith Jr. \nAustin Smith Jr. has lived in Central Oregon most of his life. He grew up on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation and is an avid hunter and fisherman\, exercising his rights as a member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs like his ancestors before him. Austin served in the United States Marine Corps from 2004 to 2009\, and was deployed three times overseas before separating from the Corps with an Honorable Discharge to pursue an education using the GI Bill. Austin attended Central Oregon Community College where he earned his Associate’s degree\, and then transferred to Oregon State University-Cascades and graduated with a degree in natural resources conservation and technology with a focus on wildlife management. While attending college\, Austin worked as a wildlife technician for the Tribes from 2010 to 2015\, and was hired on full-time by the Branch of Natural Resources in Warm Springs as the tribal wildlife biologist in 2015. Currently\, he oversees the Branch of Natural Resources for the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. Austin has a lovely wife\, a 20-year-old son\, a 3-year-old daughter\, and the newest addition\, a 1-year-old son. He enjoys his time with his family taking adventure trips to the “Inche’Wana” (Columbia River)\, and exercising his treaty hunting and fishing rights.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in our Kansas Avenue Learning Garden for our ongoing volunteer work party series. In 2022\, volunteers contributed over 200 hours to help keep our learning garden maintained over the growing season. We couldn’t do it without you! \nThis event is open to all ages and gardening abilities! No experience or tools required. Beer and non-alcoholic beverages are provided for all who volunteer. Each event includes seasonal ongoing tasks as well as special projects as needed throughout the growing season. Volunteers are welcome to pop in for an hour or stay the whole time. No need to RSVP or commit ahead of time. (Pro tip – put the following dates in your phone calendar now – then when it pops up you can decide if it works out for you or not!) \nIn 2023\, Happy Hour in the Garden will once again run twice a month from March through October. Wilson is a storyteller\, spiritual leader\, and the Warm Spring’s Paiute Tribe’s oral historian. A descendant of Paiute Chief Paulina and Chief Weahwewa\, he learned most of the stories and legends he tells from his grandmother and tribal elders in Oregon\, Washington\, Nevada\, and California. SUMMARY:Power Hour | Deschutes County 2040: Engage in the future of our community
DESCRIPTION:Between now and February 2024\, Deschutes County will be updating its Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan is the County’s roadmap for the future and provides the goals\, policies\, and actions that are intended to guide the day-to-day decisions of elected officials and staff for a 20-year period. This update will provide direction through the year 2044.  By 2044\, it’s estimated that Deschutes County will grow as a whole from 207\,921 residents to 275\,905. Right now\, Deschutes County is looking for input from residents\, business owners\, and subject matter experts. As someone who lives or works in Deschutes County\, your input is essential to preparing an effective plan.  \nJoin us to review and comment on proposed policy directions for the plan\, and share your concerns\, hopes\, and priorities with the County. If you want to have a say in how the County grows\, it is important to get involved in this process now.  \nAgenda\n5:00 – 5:30: Networking & Grab a refreshment \n5:30 – 6:30: Presentation & Discussion \nRegister for this event \nHow is the plan used?\nThe County’s Comprehensive applies to the area in County jurisdiction\, outside of city limits. The plan serves as criteria for rezonings\, provides guidance for public investments\, and sets direction for additional projects to be undertaken by County planning staff. The plan was last updated in 2010\, to plan for a 20-year period ending in 2030 and resulted in 63 subsequent projects to date including wetland mapping\, participation in a regional large lot industrial lands program\, and streamlining of processes to permit childcare. Due to significant population growth and changes in land use trends\, County staff is updating this document to reflect the most recent data and community perspectives. Deliverables from this project will include an action plan to help identify key initiatives and projects for the planning department to undertake in the next 1-5 years.  \nDeschutes County faces several challenges that the Comprehensive Plan will help address. \n\nLivability \nRural Development\nNatural Hazards\nWater\nGrowth Management\nTourism\n\nMeet our speaker\nNicole Mardell\, AICP\, Senior Long Range Planner. Nicole is the County-side project manager for the Deschutes County 2040 project\, working closely with project consultant MIG. She serves on the long-range planning team for Deschutes County\, which is responsible for planning for the future of Deschutes County. This includes developing and implementing land use policy with the Board of County Commissioners and Planning Commission and serving as the regional planning coordinating body for all cities and special districts within the County limits. She has been a planner for 8 years\, for both city and county jurisdictions. She holds a B.S. in Urban Studies from the University of Minnesota. \nRegister for this event

Apply for the Rethink Waste Community Innovation Fund! \nThe Environmental Center’s Rethink Waste Project will provide a total of $40\,000* awards to individuals\, businesses\, or community organizations to implement waste reduction or recovery projects throughout Deschutes County. Each project will be awarded up to $5\,000. There is no minimum project budget/award amount. 20% of the project funds must come from matching funds (cash or in-kind). SUMMARY:Science Pub: Science\, Spirituality and a Sustainable Future
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating Science Pub looking at the connections between science and religion. OSU-Cascades biologist Matt Orr will explain how the Anthropocene\, Earth’s present geological epoch\, is defined by a decline in environmental ecosystems\, as well as by human responses to the decline in the forms of anxiety\, guilt\, grief and illness. \nOrr will share ways in which spiritual practices have evolved in response to other significant crises over time\, and examine how contemporary spirituality practices are evolving in response to the environmental crisis. He’ll look at how this evolution may continue and improve both the environmental and human condition. \n5 p.m. DOORS OPEN/ORDER FOOD AND BEVERAGES – Enjoy dinner with fellow attendees. \n6:30 p.m. PRESENTATION – Presentation begins in Hop Mahal. \n\n\n\n\nScience Pubs are where we take science out of the laboratory and bring it to the community. His research interests focus on restoration ecology in forest\, field and stream habitats in Central Oregon. His work has included studying the behavior of scavengers; the application of restoration ecology to medicine; and the connections between science and religion. DESCRIPTION:How can we create a world in which all Americans\, regardless of income\, geography\, or race have access to healthful\, fresh\, affordable\, and culturally appropriate food? In this interactive talk\, Bryant Terry will take us on a journey of his more than two-decade career as a chef\, author\, publisher\, and community builder committed to creating a healthful\, just\, and sustainable food system. From grassroots organizing to book publishing\, Terry has employed cultural strategy\, a field of practice that centers art\, storytelling\, media\, and cooking (in Bryant’s case) to bring about social change. Through a dynamic presentation that includes singing and rapping\, and fusing personal narrative with food politics\, Terry will show us how to improve access to fresh food in our communities — whether that community is your campus\, workplace\, neighborhood\, or your group of friends. \nRegister here!

DESCRIPTION:Each year\, an estimated 25 to 40 percent of all food produced or imported for consumption in the United States is never eaten. Of that wasted food\, 40 percent is estimated to come from consumer-facing businesses— like restaurants\, event venues\, etc. And all that wasted food means wasted money\, by some estimates as much as $57 billion annually for U.S. businesses. Here in Deschutes County\, wasted food makes up over 25% of waste at Knott Landfill by tonnage – making it the largest category of waste in the landfill! \nIt’s time to rethink food waste\, and we want to help you do it. \nThis free\, interactive panel discussion will dig into tips on getting started\, infrastructure\, troubleshooting\, and more.
