SUMMARY:'Wild' Night in Bend
DESCRIPTION:BendFilm is hosting a screening of two independent films celebrating the Pacific Crest Trail and the 50thAnniversary of the Wilderness Act. Filmmakers will be in attendance! \nThe headlining film\, “Only the Essential”\, is a truly independent documentary film by former Bend resident\, Colin Arsiman.  Arisman and friend Casey Gannon thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail with cameras in hand. “Only The Essential” is the story of their 5 month\, 2668 mile journey on foot from Mexico to Canada across the wilderness of California\, Oregon\, and Washington.  Their goal was to capture the brutal\, yet breathtaking\, ebb and flow of thru-hiking.  The film serves as a window to experience the Pacific Crest Trail and witness the value of simplifying life to a point where “only the essential” remains.  Arisman and Gannon are scheduled to attend for a post-screening Q&A and a raffle.  (See more information and the trailer here: http://www.onlytheessential.com/watch) \nA screening of “The Meaning of Wild” will open the evening.  The film is a half hour documentary film that takes viewers on a journeythrough one of our nation’s wildest landscapes\, the Tongass National Forest of Southeast Alaska. The film follows wildlife cameraman Ben Hamilton as he travels by boat\, plane\, kayak and foot to capture and share the true value of Wilderness. Along the journey\, Ben encounters bears\, calving glaciers\, ancient forests\, and harsh seas\, but it’s the characters he meets along the way that bring true insight to his mission.  (See more information and the trailer here: http://www.meaningofwild.com/) \nTickets are available on BendTicket.com and on the BendFilm websites: http://bendticket.strangertickets.com/events/23290288/a-wild-night-in-bend

SUMMARY:High Desert Lecture Series: Shane Von Schlemp & Thru-Hiking the Oregon Desert Trail
DESCRIPTION:In the second installment of its new High Desert Lecture Series\, the Oregon Natural Desert Association on Wednesday\, March 11 will welcome an adventurer who last summer completed the entire 800-mile Oregon Desert Trail. \nJoin us for “Shane Von Schlemp and Through-Hiking the Oregon Desert Trail.” \nLast summer\, long-distance hiker Shane Von Schlemp became one of the first to complete the new\, roughly 800-mile Oregon Desert Trail. A project of ONDA\, the trail winds from outside Bend through Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge\, Steens Mountain Wilderness and the Owyhee Canyonlands to nearly the Idaho border. The journey took Shane through red-rock canyons\, over high alpine landscapes and across sagebrush plains. Shane will share his 34 days on the trail\, including the moments that made his heart soar and those that tested his spirit through what remains a wild\, largely undiscovered part of Oregon. \nThere will be time after the event to enjoy a beverage and chat with Shane. Space is limited. Please assist us by signing up in advance. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. \nONDA’s High Desert Lecture Series offers the chance to learn more about Oregon’s high desert from experts. SUMMARY:Energy Trust of Oregon Presents: Deep Retrofits on Historic Projects
DESCRIPTION:Join Energy Trust for the beginning of the 2015 Allies for Efficiency training series. The training will cover design and construction best practices for deep energy retrofit projects\, including a case study on the Vestas building itself. Following the training\, Energy Trust will host a catered reception\, and Vestas staff will be available to provide building tours. Professionals taking this training are eligible for 2.5 AIA LU/HSW and LFA continuing education credits. \nIn addition to the live event in Portland\, Energy Trust will host group webinars throughout Oregon. Attendees can gather in Salem\, Bend\, Medford or Eugene to watch the live presentation with an Energy Trust representative facilitating questions. \nPresenters:\nMitch Dec\, Principal\, Glumac\nSteve Clem\, Vice President of Preconstruction\, Skanska\nRenee Loveland\, Sustainability Manager\, Gerding Edlen\nSabine O’Halloran\, Principal\, Ankrom Moisan\nVanessa Benedetti\, Office Services Manager\, Vestas \nCourse Description:\nDeep retrofits go well beyond a system-by-system approach to existing building equipment upgrades. They require a holistic building redesign that incorporates infrastructure\, mechanical and electrical systems\, building skin\, renewable energy\, and energy analysis and management. Unlike new construction projects\, deep retrofits have the added complexity of working through constraints inherent in the existing structure that designers and contractors must resolve. \nThis course will present how the owner\, developer\, design teams\, and general contractor approached the conversion and deep retrofit of the former Meier & Frank warehouse into a high-performance office building that serves as the North American headquarters for Vestas. The project is LEED® Platinum certified and has achieved an Energy Star score of 99 through post occupancy energy analysis verification.

SUMMARY:City Club March Forum: The Bend Energy Challenge
DESCRIPTION:What Does the Georgetown University Energy Prize Have to Do With Us? \nBend has officially advanced to the Semifinal round of the national competition that is challenging communities across the U.S. to rethink their energy use. At a press event in Washington\, D.C.\, Bend was announced as one of the 50 local communities who are leading the way on energy efficiency. \nThis interactive City Club session will present an overview of what the Georgetown University Energy Prize competition means\, how every Bend citizen can play a part\, why it matters\, and what could be done with the $5M prize. \n“The Energy Prize competition challenges local communities to tap their imagination and work collaboratively to reduce energy consumption”\, said Bend Mayor Jim Clinton. “It’s great fit for Bend’s creative\, competitive and entrepreneurial spirit\, and gives us a unique opportunity to build momentum for a clean\, efficient and renewable energy future in Bend. ” \nBend’s local team in the Energy Prize competition is called The Bend Energy Challenge\, a collaborative project of The Environmental Center and local utilities\, government\, schools and private businesses. The Bend Energy Challenge hopes to persuade 5\,500 Bend households to reduce their energy use by at least 10%\, through a combination of low-cost and do-it-yourself energy saving activities\, home retrofits and going solar. They are also working with local government agencies to reduce their energy use by at least 10% at publicly owned and operated facilities throughout Bend.

SUMMARY:Hart Mountain Lek Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:This is one of Oregon Natural Desert Association’s volunteer work trips! View the entire event calendar here.  \n“Leks” are locations where groups of male sage-grouse return year after year to “strut their stuff” in the hopes of attracting a mate.  To the human eye the lek sites really don’t look all that different from the surrounding sagebrush\, but sage-grouse have no trouble finding them year after year. ONDA volunteers will locate the leks via GPS coordinates provided by Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge staff as well as following the unmistakable sounds the birds make during the mating ritual. There are about 52 known leks on the Refuge\, but volunteers will be focusing on a fewer specific “trend leks” used for annual monitoring. Collecting data at the leks allows the Refuge to document population trends on Hart Mountain NAR.  Considering that a large proportion of data collection work is done entirely by volunteers\, it’s easy to understand why ONDA’s involvement is so vital. At over 280\,000 acres and with only two full-time staff\, Hart Mountain NAR needs all the volunteer assistance it can get. \nParticipants will work in groups of 2 or 3 for both safety reasons as well as the benefits of having more than one person to take turns with different tasks such as using the spotting scope or recording the data. Groups will drive from the bunkhouse in separate vehicles to the point on the road closest to the lek. Then\, using GPS units to navigate cross-country in the dark\, volunteers will hike to their designated lek observation point being careful of unseen hazards such as brush and uneven terrain along the way. Once relatively close to the lek\, volunteers will be able to use the unique sounds that the male sage-grouse make to zero in on the lek. As day breaks\, volunteers will use spotting scopes (provided by Refuge and ONDA) to count the number of individual males and females.

SUMMARY:Birders' Night
DESCRIPTION:Abbot Schindler\, Bird Photography  \n\n\nBird photography is one of Abbott Schindler’s many interests in the natural world\, and he has been photographing nature for many years. In this century he’s worked to get “close and personal” to birds in particular (they’re generally safer than bison\, moose\, bear and elk\, which he’s also gotten uncomfortably close to). His photographic work and equipment take advantage of his extensive R&D experience\, studies of photographic technique and composition\, and classroom experiences. His work has been published in scientific and industry journals and fine art books\, and is used extensively by the High Desert Museum. \n\nSocial gathering time is from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Programs begin at 7:00 p.m. and usually last until 8:30 p.m. \nFree and open to the public. You do not need to be a member of any group to attend.
