SUMMARY:The Secret Lives of Sage Grouse
DESCRIPTION:High Desert Speaker Series Bend: Stuart Garrett- The Secret Lives of Sage Grouse\nThe Greater sage-grouse is an imperiled bird that lives on public lands right in our backyard. The elaborate courtship ritual and decorated plumage of this bird have captivated the minds and hearts of desert visitors throughout the western United States. But this bird has faced a number of threats in recent years that led scientists to consider its listing under the Endangered Species Act. In recent years\, federal agencies have developed new protection guidelines for this bird in lieu of listing. \nLocal physician and conservation advocate Stuart Garrett will discuss recent attempts to protect the sage-grouse and highlight how sagebrush habitat is important to the bird’s life cycle. Don’t miss this chance to get more information on how we can protect habitat for this bird that lives on public lands in our own high desert backyard! \nJoin us for an evening highlighting the best of your high desert. \nThe event is free and open to the public. Space is limited. Doors will open at 6:30p.m. with the speaker beginning at 7p.m. For more information about other speakers in this series\, visit ONDA.org/HighDesertSeries

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Death by Design
DESCRIPTION:The Dirty Secret of Our Digital Addiction\n\n  \nJoin The Environmental Center at The Old Stone for a screening of Death by Design. \n\nWhat is the cost of our digital dependency?\n\n\n \n\n\nDeath by Design\, a feature length documentary\, explores this question and uncovers a global story of damaged lives\, environmental destruction and devices that are designed to die.\n\n\n \n\n\nConsumers love – and live on – their smartphones\, tablets and laptops. But this revolution has a dark side\, hidden from most consumers. From the intensely secretive factories in China\, to a ravaged New York community and the high tech corridors of Silicon Valley\, the film tells a story of environmental degradation\, of health tragedies\, and the fast approaching tipping point between consumerism and sustainability.\n\n\n \n\n\nMore about the film: http://deathbydesignfilm.com/\n\n$5 suggested donation at door.

SUMMARY:February Nature Night
DESCRIPTION:The Oregon spotted frog is a small amphibian that is currently having a large impact on Central Oregon. Join biologist and spotted frog expert Jay Bowerman to learn more about this native frog and its habitat. Jay will shed light on the spotted frog’s life history\, ecological needs\, abilities\, and the challenges it face of habitat loss\, invasive species\, and an uncertain political climate. Jay has been observing the species in Sunriver for more than 40 years\, and more recently added study sites in and near Bend. \n***This event is free\, but registration is required. Registration opens 1 month prior to the event.*** \nJay Bowerman holds a M.S. in biology from University of Oregon where he studied salamander chromosomes. After 20 years as the executive director of the Sunriver Nature Center\, Jay has returned to biological research that focuses on amphibian ecology. He is the author of more than twenty journal papers ranging from amphibian deformities to leeches. In recent years Jay has focused on mentoring young scientists while continuing studies of western toads\, Oregon spotted frogs\, and the impact of introduced species\, especially bullfrogs\, on native amphibians. In his spare time Jay and his wife Teresa stay involved in a variety of local cultural events such as the Wheeler County Bluegrass Festival and the Hoedown for Hunger at Bend’s Community Center. Most recently they have been learning to be grandparents.

SUMMARY:Inner Sustainability through Living Mindfully
DESCRIPTION:Whatever our outer work\, our effectiveness in it depends on how well we are sustaining ourselves on the inside. The practical tools of mindfulness help to reconnect our attention and intention with values and wisdom\, that alignment that often gets watered down or lost altogether\, as we face the challenges and stresses of our lives. Mindfulness is foundational to making the world a better place\, by starting with yourself. \nLaura Bartels\, Executive Director of the Mindful Life Program based in Colorado\, will talk about how developing the four key areas of mindfulness—attention\, values\, wisdom and an open heart—can transform your life and build resiliency.  Join her on March 1st at 6 pm for this free talk entitled “Inner Sustainability through Living Mindfully” followed by a time for questions. The talk will take place at The Environmental Center\, 16 NW Kansas Avenue\, Bend. \nBy far\, one of the biggest obstacles to finding inner peace and developing our highest potential is the inability to direct our attention where we would like\, such as to our intentions for the day or to those activities that are meaningful for us. Through mindfulness\, we can consciously train our mind and develop the ability to direct it where we would like and attend to what we choose to attend to. If we don’t train our mind\, it can endlessly drag us from one thought to another\, compulsively drawing our attention away from what we are presently doing and from what we would like to be thinking about. How much of each day are we able to actually be in the present moment? So much of our life goes by without actually being present in the moment. If we are minds aren’t in the present\, then we cannot consciously bring our intention to our days. Researchers report that a wandering mind can be a detriment to being happy.   \nBartels says\, “Mindfulness goes well beyond individual benefits and supports positive impacts on others and our communities\, creating more compassionate and equitable relationships.” \nLaura Bartels will share the full MLP Mindfulness Foundations course March 3rd – 5th\, which offers practical\, accessible and universal skills to live a meaningful life.
