SUMMARY:July Green Drinks - B Corps in Bend
DESCRIPTION:Every other month\, The Environmental Center and our Green Spot business partners host Green Drinks – a networking event with a mix of business and community members. \nThis month\, we’ll be talking all about B Corporations. B Corps are companies using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems around the world. Oregon and California are leading the way both in the number of registered and certified B Corps. There are 51 of these companies in Oregon alone\, and we’re bringing together two from Bend to share more about their B Corp journeys. \nThe event will be co-hosted by Moementum\, innovators in leadership development and executive coaching\, and Pacific Superfood Snacks\, the brand behind nutritional kale chips born in the Pacific Northwest. The format of this event is designed to be interactive and to prompt participation in the discussion. We’ll divide into smaller groups to facilitate meaningful conversations with the B Corp teams\, and to allow attendees to ask lots of questions. Come check out Pacific Superfood Snacks’ facility and learn from these amazing businesses! (222 SE Reed Market Rd.\, #500\, Bend\, OR 97702) \nWhy Attend?\nB Corps outperform other businesses\, drive capital\, create higher quality jobs and improve the quality of life in our communities. The B Corp certification process provides businesses with a means to continuously improve\, while taking into account a broader spectrum of the communities\, people and suppliers they touch. \nWho is the event for?\nAny business or person working to embed the principles of sustainability and/or the values of B Corps in their day-to-day operations.  \nWho will be there?\nBusiness owners\, staff\, entrepreneurs and community members who are curious about what B Corps are all about. \n  \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nGreen Drinks is an international concept and is an enjoyable way to network\, learn about local businesses and their sustainability efforts\, and have an eco-conscious drink or two!  Bring your own cup and consider carpooling\, walking\, biking or transit to get to the event!

SUMMARY:Building a Better Nest
DESCRIPTION:For 15 years\, Evelyn Hess and her husband lived in a tent a trailer\, without electricity or running water\, on 20 acres of wild land in the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range. When they decided to build a “real” house at long last\, they knew it would have to respect the lessons of simple living that they learned while living their camping life. “We also knew we could not do it alone\,” says Hess. Her book\,” Building a Better Nest\,” chronicles the experience of seeking a model for sustainable living as they constructed a tiny house of their own. In this talk\, Hess will discuss sustainable living\, living off the grid and her own adventures in “building a better nest.”

SUMMARY:Backyard Farm Tour
DESCRIPTION:The 6th rendition of the BackyardFarmTour will take place the weekend following Labor day\, Sept. 12-13.  Still to be determined is if it will be 1 or 2 days. As always we will seek out some new places and revisit some of our old favorites. The BYFT is largely self selecting\, so let me know if you are interested in participating this year.  I also appreciate any other other ideas or input you may have.  Of course the key part of putting the BYFT together is finding the farms and gardens to be on it.  I appreciate any and all leads. Even if it is just a place you drove by that looks good. \nVolunteers on the organizational side are sought\, too. \nWe are having another fabulous year for gardening in Central Oregon\, so how could we not have another fabulous BackyardFarmTour? \nFollow BYFT developments on at http://backyardfarmtour.com where you can get our RSS feed\, subscribe to our email list or at our Facebook page\, http://facebook.com/Backyardfarmtour.
