SUMMARY:A Firsthand Account: The Crisis at the Border
DESCRIPTION:Julio Ricardo Varela’s many years covering issues and events directly impacting the Latino\, Hispanic and Latinx communities have positioned him as one of the leading voices when addressing the migrant situation at the southern border. In the last few years we have seen the largest flows of migration at the U.S. – Mexico border since the mid-2000’s and the U.S. Government is now tasked with tackling one of America’s most pressing issues that has no sign of slowing down or going away. In this inspiring keynote\, Julio Ricardo Varela will tackle the stories from the border that the mainstream media tends to ignore\, and will share the latest firsthand accounts of those battling one of the country’s most misunderstood and misinformed issues.

SUMMARY:Other Side of the Hill film screening
DESCRIPTION:Where can East & West\, Republicans & Democrats\, find the common ground needed to address climate change? How can industry and  environmentalists work hand in hand? And how can local economies find opportunity in a lower emissions future? \nOTHER SIDE OF THE HILL explores the impacts of a changing climate in rural Eastern Oregon as seen through the eyes of local leaders on the ground. From innovative timber operations to large scale solar\, this film amplifies the voices of rural communities often left unheard\, and\nshines a light on stories of progress and hope. In a time of perceived cultural divide between rural and urban\, left and right\, young and old\, we discover common ground in an urgency to address a changing landscape. \nJoin us as we watch this film and discuss how we in Deschutes County can find a future for clean energy. We’ll be joined by Deschutes County Commissioner Phil Chang to kick off the event and Nick Johnson and Jim Walls\, two of the featured leaders in the film\, will join us for a panel discussion following the film screening. \n  \nRegister here! \n  \nThis event is cohosted with:
