SUMMARY:Confluence Conversation: A Native Lens on Regenerative Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Since settler colonialism\, seasonal flooding along the Columbia has been a threat\, a destabilizing force to be mitigated. Native understanding knows that seasonal flooding brings necessary replenishment and resources for sustainable ecosystem health. Join David Lewis and Eric Quaempts for a discussion about Traditional life along the watersheds and how Native knowledge is addressing concerns for healthier watersheds today and moving forward. \nThis partnered event is the first of a three-part series offered by the Columbia Slough Watershed Council. The series examines the history of the watershed and its management to help inform current developments of a new watershed district with a stronger commitment to improved wildlife habitat\, water quality\, and the promotion of equity and social justice. \nSupport for this program comes from the Oregon Cultural Trust and the Multnomah County Drainage District.

SUMMARY:What Happened Before the Big Bang? with Ethan Siegel
DESCRIPTION:In the 1920’s\, cosmologists theorized that the Universe originated from a hotter\, denser state: this led to what we know today as the Big Bang. By extrapolating backwards to a variety of temperatures and times\, we were able to predict a number of consequences of this scenario. But this extrapolation led to problems as well: things that were observed but weren’t predicted. Scientists couldn’t simply give up and conclude that we couldn’t figure out what came before the beginning. Ethan Siegel will share how the last 40 years of research has uncovered what happened before – and beyond – the Big Bang\, and where the frontiers of knowledge are today.

SUMMARY:Harney County Migratory Bird Festival
DESCRIPTION:Spend an amazing weekend witnessing the spectacular spring  migration in the Harney Basin of Southeast Oregon. View thousands of migratory birds as they rest and feed in the open spaces of Oregon’s  high desert. Held annually in April in Harney County. \nThe Harney County Migratory Bird Festival was first held in 1981 to celebrate the large annual migration of birds passing through Harney Basin on the Pacific Flyway. Harney Basin is one of the three most important areas left in the western United States for spring migratory birds stopping on their way north. \nOver 300 species of birds use the refuge throughout each year\, making Harney Basin a bird watcher’s paradise. Today\, we continue to celebrate the migratory birds’ return each year with guided tours led by experts\, workshops\, and fun activities for both youth and adults.

SUMMARY:2021 Earth Day artwork by Madeline Magaña
DESCRIPTION:Introducing the 2021 Earth Day artwork by Madeline Magaña! Madeline is 16 years young and a proud member of the Latinx community here in Bend\, Oregon. She uses art to inspire others\, and to express love for her culture and artistry. Madeline is a bilingual/bilateral student at Bend Senior High who enjoys painting\, playing sports and listening to music. \nIn Madeline’s words:\nThis art piece is meant to bring omen to the earth and to my ancestors\, The Mexicas of Tenochtitlan\, although they didn’t identify as Aztec these people claim the meaning of the work Aztec meaning “inhabitants of Aztla.” I want to bring light and love to how they were aware of their environment\, respected\, and learned to coexist with the earth. Everything from the rain to the soft soil on the earth was meaningful to them. I want this painting to demonstrate and embrace the colors\, the Gods\, plants\, animals and insects. I want people to feel the painting and remember how amazing and lucky we are to live on earth\, and to remember how our ancestors depended and took care of it. \nMeet the artist and view her artwork in our Kansas Ave. Learning Garden. You can also purchase a popsicle from Rawmona’s Kitchen on site!
