SUMMARY:Youth Climate Ecochallenge: A Drawdown Solutions Race!
DESCRIPTION:TEC would like to share an online educational opportunity – the Youth Climate Ecochallenge: A Drawdown Solutions Race. The challenge is presented by PAE and Ecochallenge.org and sponsored by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. The challenge focuses on top solutions to reverse climate change. It features online learning and research\, civic engagement\, and community building for youth and their community. The challenge runs April 15th – May 15th. \nThe actions in the challenge connect to solutions highlighted in Drawdown\, a project that maps\, measures\, models\, and describes solutions to global warming that already exist. Participants track and share their progress in the Ecochallenge platform\, earn points for taking action\, and see the real-time impact of their actions. The combination of collective action\, community-building\, and friendly competition makes change a little easier — and a lot more fun.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED-How to Cost Effectively Build Zero Energy Home
DESCRIPTION:Join EEBA (Energy & Environmental Building Alliance) and Earth Advantage for this 1-day training and learn how to eliminate common barriers to Zero Energy (ZE) home construction\, benefit from the rapid trend towards ZE\, and earn a ‘Zero Energy Builder’ designation.\nZero Energy (ZE) homes are a big part of the future of home building business. While the materials and equipment to reach zero energy are available\, designers and builders must create a bundle of energy-efficiency features that matches their climate\, customers\, and business constraints. \nThis 7-hour class lays out numerous elements of zero energy design and construction\, so that building professionals can formulate a package appropriate for their situation. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Participants in this class will learn design principles\, equipment options\, emerging technologies\, material selections\, and construction practices that can be integrated into their building process. Strong emphasis is placed on ways to make the final product affordable for homebuyers. Sales and marketing ideas\, as well as localized resources\, builder spotlights\, programs and next steps will also be presented. \n‘Zero Energy Builder’ Designation \nParticipants will have the opportunity to earn EEBA’s ‘Zero Energy Builder’ designation and be listed on EEBA & EA registries of accredited professionals. To earn the designation\, attendees must pass a designation exam and have completed and passed one of the following prerequisite trainings (or sets of trainings): EA’s Sustainable Homes Professional (SHP); EA’s Sustainable Building Essentials; EEBA’s HERS Associate & Taking the Performance Path + Houses That Work + High Performance Mechanicals. \n12 Steps to Affordable Zero Energy Design & Construction \nIt’s generally accepted that improvements to the thermal envelope are fundamental. These include high levels of insulation\, reduction of thermal bridges and advanced air sealing. However\, significant efficiency improvements in heating and cooling equipment and the rapid drop in the cost of rooftop solar electric systems offer new options for cost-effective efficiency packages. There have never been so many ZE options to choose from. This course gives building professionals the knowledge to build ZE homes that are affordable\, durable\, safe\, healthy\, energy efficient\, and comfortable to live in. \nThe training material is organized into 12 easy steps: \n\nStart with Smart Design\nOrient for Sun Tempering\nOptimize with Energy Modeling\nSuper-seal the Envelope\nSuper-insulate the Envelope\nSelect Optimum Window Efficiency\nEnsure Clean\, Fresh Air\nSpecify High-performance Heating and Cooling\nHeat Water Wisely\nSelect High-Efficiency Lighting\nChoose Efficient Appliances\nUse Renewable Energy\n\nEach step describes the most recent developments with a strong emphasis on affordability. Other topics include: housing market drivers\, ways to assess and communicate economic benefits\, available incentives\, along with marketing and sales concepts for ZE homes. \n\nAttendees will: \n\nIdentify factors that are driving the U.S. housing market toward ZE\nName barriers to the widespread adoption of ZE homes\nDescribe three ways to present the financial benefits of ZE homes\nList six affordable ZE features that you can incorporate into your practice\nBe invited to bring house specs and evaluate possible advancements along the 12 steps to ZE\nCreate a marketing and sales messages that your company can use to promote ZE homes\nLearn about available Energy Trust EPS incentives through their just released Net Zero and Energy Smart Home offerings\n\n\nCredits: 7 CEs for AIA\, NAHB\, NARI\, NATE\, CCB and OREA; 0.7 for ICC; 5 for RESNET\, 3.5 for BPI \nCost: $49 (Regularly $175) \nAudience: Building industry professionals (builders\, raters\, architects\, HVAC\, subcontractors\, utility representatives & code officials) \nInstructor: Bruce Sullivan of BASE zero\, LLC \nQuestions? Contact hkendall@earthadvantage.org or 503-968-7160 x20. \nThis training made possible thanks to EEBA\, Energy Trust of Oregon\, and Earth Advantage.

DESCRIPTION:High Desert Community Radio KPOV 88.9 FM\nWednesday\, April 22\, 12 am to 8 am and 1 pm to 5 pm \nThe Wetland Project is a multipart\, multidisciplinary study of an environmental soundscape. The inspiration lies in a tiny bit of Earth and the sounds that emanate from it: the ṮEḴTEḴSEN marsh in unceded W̱SÁNEĆ territory\, Saturna Island\, British Columbia. The sonic phenomena produced by this little wetland — and by wetlands everywhere — tend toward infinity\, but sadly also toward extinction. SUMMARY:The Secret Life of Rivers
DESCRIPTION:The Coalition for the Deschutes and Deschutes Redbands Chapter of Trout Unlimited would like to invite you to join via Zoom for a presentation with the entertaining\, edifying\, and endearing aquatic ecologist\, Dr. Jerry Freilich. \nRivers are like eyeglasses. Glasses appear transparent and utterly simple\, yet the subtle curves of a lens are anything but simple. Likewise\, a river seems like a pipe where water enters the top\, runs down a channel\, and empties into the sea. What could be simpler? Actually\, the ecology of rivers is complex\, concealed\, eye-opening and will likely surprise you. This program by Dr. Jerry Freilich will explain how rivers work. How many organisms actually make up the riverine ecosystem? Where do they get their energy? And how many of them have you actually heard of? With awareness of riverine ecology\, you will understand why it is unrealistic to think of a river as pipe and why rivers are so important to the basins they drain. \nWhen: Wednesday\, April 22nd\, 5:00 – 6:30 pm\, including time for Q & A\nVia Zoom. Join the meeting here:\nhttps://zoom.us/j/93292932101?pwd=aXlaaVgzWWtwRFdFbThPenJwUlRwZz09 \nWho the heck is this Jerry guy?\nDr. Jerry Freilich is a native of Philadelphia. He worked at the Academy of Natural Sciences there beginning at age 11. He is an aquatic ecologist who spent 25 years working for the National Park Service in six parks nationwide. For the last 13 years he was Research Coordinator at Olympic National Park and recently retired to Bend. Jerry’s PhD work was a study of salmonflies at Grand Teton National Park. The work required individually tagging 3\,000 salmonfly nymphs with tiny numbered tags and following their movements about in the river. Although this gave him the microscopic-eye view of river ecology\, he warns not to try this at home.

SUMMARY:This Land: Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:“Runner and advocate Faith E. Briggs used to run through the streets of Brooklyn every morning. Now\, she’s running 150 miles through three U.S. National Monuments that lay in the thick of the controversy around public lands. Accompanied by running companions who represent diverse perspectives in what it means to be a public land owner\, she assesses what is at stake if previously protected lands are reduced and if the public is largely unaware. THIS LAND is a story about land access told through a journey of inclusion and empowerment.” \nJoin Oregon Wilf for a screening of THIS LAND followed by a panel discussion featuring Ani Kame’enui\, Autumn Harry\, and José González\, moderated by Faith E. Briggs.
