SUMMARY:Steens Backcountry Fence Repair Trip
DESCRIPTION:The Oregon Natural Desert Association has openings for a few more volunteers to join us for the Steens Backcountry Fence Repair Trip July 8-13. Volunteers will backpack into our base camp located along the Donner und Blitzen River. The work includes several days of repairing sections of the Steens Mountain Wilderness boundary fence and opportunities to explore the area. This giant fault block Mountain\, nearly 10\,000 feet high\, carved by glaciers\, and covered by wildflowers elicits terms such as “gem”\, “jewel”\, and “iconic”. This year\, the Oregon Natural Desert Association is offering an additional backpacking work trip on Steens Mountain. \nHelping remove obsolete fences from cow-free areas has been an ONDA priority since it was founded in 1987. Recently\, ONDA has acquired the skill set to build and repair fences. Sometimes fences can be a good thing for wildlife. This is certainly the case for the cow free boundary fence to the Steens Wilderness that is the only thing keeping the cows out. On this trip we will backpack to the edge of the Wilderness boundary and spend several days working with the BLM to repair the boundary fence. \n \nRegister and learn more about this trip at the Oregon Natural Desert Association’s website.

SUMMARY:Lexicon of Sustainability Art Show
DESCRIPTION:Come on down to The Environmental Center to view the ongoing pop-up art show of the Lexicon of Sustainability. This project is based on a simple principle: people can’t be expected to live more sustainable lives if they don’t know the most basic terms and principles that define sustainability. \nBy illuminating the vocabulary of sustainable agriculture\, and with it\, the conversation about America’s rapidly evolving food culture\, the Lexicon of Sustainability educated\, engages\, and activates people to pay closer attention to how they eat\, what they buy\, and where their responsibility begins for creating a healthier\, safer food system in America. \nThe show will be hanging on the outside front porch and in the Audubon room\, High Desert room\, and hallway of The Environmental Center through the rest of July and August. Take your time looking through the art\, and when you are done\, please answer our question: How are you Living the Green in Bend? From all of the answers submitted\, we will be drawing for 2 free tickets to the sold-out Jack Johnson All At Once show on August 24th. The Environmental Center is one of a few nonprofits in OR to be sponsored during this show! Ticket Drawing will take place on August 18th. \nYour answers will also be shared on our website\, in social media (#livingthegreen #inBend)\, and at The Environmental Center. \nIf you are interested in hosting these images at your school\, farm\, or business\, please contact Owen Murphy or call 541-383-7766. Live\, learn\, and inspire!
