SUMMARY:Cost Effective Pathway to Zero Energy Homes
DESCRIPTION:Hear the latest developments on new and cost-effective approaches to ZE construction.\n\n\n The State of California’s building code requires that all new buildings in CA be built to zero energy standards by 2020\, and the Governor of Oregon issued an executive order in 2017 that requires all new homes to achieve a zero energy ready standard by 2023. A rapidly increasing number of architects and builders in Oregon are stepping up to the challenge by creating zero energy homes and have been doing so for many years. The question is\, how can this be achieved cost effectively? \nAdvanced heat pump technology\, lighting\, and solar PV options are challenging the old zero energy paradigm of investments in air sealing\, insulation\, and expensive window upgrades. Earth Advantage has also recently switched from a “site” to “source” definition for Zero Energy home certification\, which now allows gas-heated homes to be eligible. \n\n\n\nThis will be an in-person broadcast of the webinar followed by a local market discussion and Q&A with local Zero Energy home certification providers. DESCRIPTION:Join Tom Lawler\, expert local birder and nature photographer\, to discover the rich bird habitats of Sunriver. With Tom’s keen eye and guidance\, you will spot and learn to identify a variety of species found in the wetlands\, meadows\, and forests surrounding the Nature Center. Whether you are new to birding or an experienced birder\, there is always something exciting to see through your binoculars! \nEarly registration is strongly encouraged and participation is limited to 12 birders. Expect to walk approximately three to four miles along various trails. Please no strollers or dogs. Wear sturdy and water-resistant footwear and bring a bottle of water and a pair of binoculars with you. Bird walks are geared toward adults\, however children with a serious interest in birding are welcome with a parent/guardian.

The Community Climate Action Plan goals are to establish a roadmap for the community to achieve fossil fuel use reductions of 40% by 2030 and 70% by 2050. Development of the Community Climate Action Plan calls for participation by the entire community. The goals are set\, but how we get there is still being decided. We need community members and organizations to help us figure out how to do this for Bend. \nThe CASC is convening topic-specific working groups to support the development of the Bend Community Climate Action Plan. The topics include energy supply\, energy in buildings\, waste & materials management\, and transportation. The working groups play a vital role of helping brainstorm and develop potential actions we can take as a community to meet our fossil fuel use reduction goals. \nEach working group meets twice. DESCRIPTION:Emma Marris will talk about the future of fresh water. She will cover global and local challenges as increasing populations struggle to share a finite amount of water. She’ll delve into one of the biggest challenges for those who want to talk about freshwater: much of it is hidden. Come to gain an understanding of the state of freshwater in the Deschutes and Klamath basins and around the world\, and leave with a set of concrete actions to take and new ways to visualize the Earth’s hidden water. \nThis presentation complements the exhibit\, Water Tables\, featuring works by Pat Clark on display at Bend Art Center and the COCC Library from October 5 – November 25. \nCo-hosted by The Nancy R. Chandler Visiting Scholar Program at COCC Foundation\, Bend Art Center and Coalition for the Deschutes. \nAbout Marris \nEmma Marris has written about the environment and other topics for National Geographic\, Wired\, The New York Times and Outside\, among others. SUMMARY:Public Meeting for Swalley Draft Watershed Plan-EA
DESCRIPTION:On September 21\, 2018 the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) released a Draft Watershed Plan-Environmental Assessment (Plan-EA) for the Swalley Irrigation District Irrigation Modernization Project. The proposed project will pipe 16.6 miles of canals and laterals over seven years to improve water conservation\, water delivery reliability\, and public safety. NRCS developed the Draft Plan-EA in partnership with Swalley Irrigation District\, the Deschutes Basin Board of Control\, and Farmers Conservation Alliance. A public meeting will be held to inform the community and gather public comments. \nThe Draft Plan-EA and appendices with supporting information are available at oregonwatershedplans.org. Limited copies of the Draft Plan-EA are also available at the Deschutes Public Library in Bend\, the NRCS office in Redmond\, and the Swalley Irrigation District office. DESCRIPTION:Join Tom Lawler\, expert local birder and nature photographer\, to discover the rich bird habitats of Sunriver. With Tom’s keen eye and guidance\, you will spot and learn to identify a variety of species found in the wetlands\, meadows\, and forests surrounding the Nature Center. Whether you are new to birding or an experienced birder\, there is always something exciting to see through your binoculars! \nEarly registration is strongly encouraged and participation is limited to 12 birders. Expect to walk approximately three to four miles along various trails. Please no strollers or dogs. Wear sturdy and water-resistant footwear and bring a bottle of water and a pair of binoculars with you. Bird walks are geared toward adults\, however children with a serious interest in birding are welcome with a parent/guardian.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Coalition for the Deschutes (CFD) and Tumalo Creek Kayak and Canoe (TCKC) for a water-based exploration of the Upper Deschutes\, from Dillon to Benham Falls and back. \nDiscover the river with awesome CFD volunteer\, volcanologist Dr. Daniele McKay. Daniele will shed light on Central Oregon’s volcanic tantrums of the past and how the Deschutes River and its watershed have responded to eruptions\, lava flows\, and other geologic events. \nDaniele has a PhD in geology from the University of Oregon. She studies volcanic activity and has focused much of her research on Central Oregon volcanoes. \nTCKC will provide all the equipment for this trip. Be sure to sign up in advance!

DESCRIPTION:On October 2\, 2018 the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced a public scoping meeting to consider improvements to aging irrigation infrastructure in Lone Pine Irrigation District\, located primarily in northwest Crook County\, as well as northern Deschutes County and southern Jefferson County. Improvements under consideration may be partially funded through the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act of 1954 (PL 83-566) and would address water conservation\, enhancement of aquatic species habitat\, and public safety risks while supporting existing agricultural land use. DESCRIPTION:The Deschutes National Forest in partnership with Discover Your Forest is hosting a Volunteer Information Night on Thursday\, October 18th\, 2018 to offer information to members of the public interested in assisting with educational programs at Mt. Bachelor and other locations on the Forest. \nThe event is focused on recruiting volunteers to serve as winter interpretive rangers and winter conservation education rangers; however individuals interested in other volunteer opportunities are welcome and encouraged to attend. \nVolunteer Rangers will represent the U.S. Forest Service at Mt. Bachelor. Programs taking place this winter include: Ski with a FS Interpretive Ranger\, Snowshoe with a FS Interpretive Ranger\, our youth education based programs Project S.N.O.W and Jr. Snow Ranger. Duties include delivering mile long snowshoe tours or skiing blue ski runs while providing formal interpretive talks. DESCRIPTION:Join Tom Lawler\, expert local birder and nature photographer\, to discover the rich bird habitats of Sunriver. With Tom’s keen eye and guidance\, you will spot and learn to identify a variety of species found in the wetlands\, meadows\, and forests surrounding the Nature Center. Whether you are new to birding or an experienced birder\, there is always something exciting to see through your binoculars! \nEarly registration is strongly encouraged and participation is limited to 12 birders. Expect to walk approximately three to four miles along various trails. Please no strollers or dogs. Wear sturdy and water-resistant footwear and bring a bottle of water and a pair of binoculars with you. Bird walks are geared toward adults\, however children with a serious interest in birding are welcome with a parent/guardian.
