SUMMARY:2019 Salmon Run
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the 31st Annual Salmon Run\nThe Environmental Center is the Salmon Run beneficiary!\nKick off the 2019 race season with a true Bend tradition. One of the first half marathons of the year in the Northwest\, it has long been central to the local racing scene. Because of its early-season timing\, it is also the quintessential race for runners looking to build a base for future races. \nEach year\, the mighty Salmon make an expedition of a lifetime back to their homes – traversing thousands of miles and overcoming countless obstacles on their river journeys. The Salmon juxtapose the infinite space of their ocean homes against the micro-streams of their birth in one monumental run. Their achievement is awesome in the true sense of the word. \nIn much the same way\, the Salmon Run is a “homecoming” to the countless number of runners who return year after year to run this beautiful course. The completion of this race is an achievement that is nothing short of awesome. \nChoose to race a 5K\, 10K\, Half Marathon. Learn more and sign up today: https://bendraces.com/salmon-run/ \nVOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THIS EVENT. Please help us out! Email Lauren if you’re interested.

SUMMARY:UP North Loop Talks
DESCRIPTION:Imagine walking out your front door one day in May and not coming back until early November\, covering more than 2\,600 miles on foot between those two days. \nThat’s just what Ras and Kathy Vaughn did last year when they embarked on a journey through the Pacific Northwest\, stitching together portions of several long trails in order to create one massive loop hike. \nRas and Kathy – also known as Team UltraPedestrian – were the first people to ground-truth a possible cross-country connection between the Idaho Centennial Trail and the Oregon Desert Trail\, a route which also includes extensive cross-country travel. With a bit of shimmying through canyons and a few twists and turns\, they made it work. \nThis adventurous thru-hiking duo will be presenting near you soon: \nUP North Loop Talks \n\nApril 11\, 7 p.m. | Footzone\, Bend\, OR\nApril 24\, 7 p.m. | Mountain Supply\, Bend\, OR\nMay 7\, 6 p.m. | Deschutes Public Library\, Downtown Bend\, OR

SUMMARY:2019 Furniture Flip & Festival
DESCRIPTION:Re-imagine a world of less waste and more creative homes with the 2019 Furniture Flip & Festival\, featuring the return of Trashformations!\nThe 5th Annual Furniture Flip Design Challenge\, sponsored by DIY Cave\, has returned to the Bend ReStore. This year\, the popular community event — during which creative Central Oregonians transform discarded furniture\, home accessories and/or building materials into something new and noteworthy — is expanding: Known as “Flip Festival 2019\,” it spans two weeks and includes a live construction event and artist demonstrations. \nThe Fest kicks off on Saturday\, April 6 with the rebirth of the beloved community event “Trashformations\,” originally held at Pak-it Liquidators. During this one-day marathon arts project\, local artists\, welders\, DIY’ers\, crafters and curious folks will gather at the Bend ReStore and convert leftover\, broken\, discarded or otherwise unloved items into one-of-a-kind sculptures\, artworks\, furniture and garden art. You’re invited to come watch the creativity unfold! \nOn Friday\, April 12\, the Furniture Flip and Trashformations masterpieces will be revealed and sold during a reception and awards event from 6-8 pm. \nOn Saturday\, April 13\, the Flip and Trashformations pieces will be on display and for sale (minus the items snapped up on Friday night) during regular ReStore hours (10 am-4 pm). From 11 am-3 pm\, a rotating line-up of local artists will offer inspiring and novice-friendly demonstrations for anyone interested in tackling their own upcycle projects. \nIn a world where TV design shows and internet shopping have all but eliminated any sense of individual personality from home improvement\, we could all use some inspiration! \nWhen you shop Flip Festival at the ReStore\, you support the arts\, the environment and families in our community. This year\, Bend Area Habitat for Humanity celebrates 30 years and the dedication of 128 homes for local families and individuals. \nEvent Schedule: \nSaturday\, April 6 from 10 am–4 pm: Trashformations Live Construction Event \nFriday\, April 12 from 6–8 pm: Furniture Flip Reception and Awards Show \nSaturday\, April 13: Furniture Flip and Trashformations Show (10 am-4 pm) \nArtist Demonstrations (11 am–3 pm)

SUMMARY:Youth Unstoppable\, a documentary
DESCRIPTION:At age 15\, filmmaker Slater Jewell-Kemker began attending environmental summits\, camera in hand\, wide-eyed and ready to make a difference. What began as a single journey evolved into an intimate and challenging documentary shot behind the front lines of the largely unseen and misunderstood global youth climate movement. Seen through the lens of Slater’s camera\, Youth Unstoppable documents the struggles\, events\, and first hand effects on the youth fighting to be heard at home and within the frustrating and complex process of UN Climate Change negotiations. Youth Unstoppable shows us a powerful vision for the future of our planet and the young people who will lead us there. \nTickets can be purchased here.

DESCRIPTION:Join Deschutes Land Trust + Base Camp Studio as we craft our very own Magnificent Monarch Wings! \nUse your creativity to bring awareness to a cause! Western monarch butterfly populations are in decline. As an important breeding ground for monarchs\, Central Oregonians are working together to bring the monarchs back! \nHelp get the word out by making and wearing your own monarch butterfly wings! \nUse fabric\, paint\, and other materials to make your own monarch wings then join Deschutes Land Trust\, Base Camp Studio\, and The Environmental Center to walk in a kaleidoscope of butterflies at the Earth Day Fair & Parade. \nThis drop-in wing making session will led by Base Camp Studio and Land Trust staff to help us on our journey to create and protect our butterflies. \nBring the whole gang or plan some quality time with a parent\, child\, grandparent\, niece\, friend… you get the idea! The studio is open for all ages to connect with others doing\, creating\, and protecting what we love. No art experience necessary. We will have all the materials you will need and a facilitator to help you get started in our journey!

SUMMARY:Living in the Future’s Past\, the film
DESCRIPTION:Producer Jeff Bridges narrates this beautifully photographed\, thoughtful film which looks at issues we face as an interconnected world on the brink of a devastating future. Thought leaders and scientists challenge us to broaden our thinking about the true connection among all Earth’s inhabitants. With a focus on the currency of life—energy—the film looks at human impacts on the Earth and what that means going forward. \nIngenuity is in our DNA\, and could the solution be inside us? Can we move into the future wisely? What kind of future do you want to see? \nOpen to the public; $5 donation welcome.
