SUMMARY:Juniper Group Sierra Club Holiday Pot Luck
DESCRIPTION:Join The Juniper Group Sierra Club for the annual Holiday Party & Pot Luck (and Food Drive!)\nFrom the Juniper Group newsletter…. \nBring a favorite main or side dish\, appetizer\, salad or dessert to set on the table (yum!)\, plus your beverage of choice (we’ll provide the nonalcoholic kind). New members\, we want to meet YOU! \nThis year we’ve initiated a Holiday nonperishable Food Drive to help Central Oregon families in need. \nBring one or more canned or nonperishable nutritious food items to help stamp out hunger.  According to the USDA\, Oregon is one of the five hungriest states nationally\, and local food banks have trouble keeping enough on their shelves this time of year.  Your compassionate donations will be distributed to area food banks. \nLocal duo NTT (“entity”) is back!  Kevin and Debby will play a selection of lively favorites and Holiday tunes\, where guitar\, flute\, percussion and voice blend into their unique harmony. Really wonderful entertainment! \nSlides of recent hikes and camp outs will loop during the evening\, and we’ll share a brief overview of 2017 programs and aspirations. \nNew Membership forms will be available\, just $15.  If you’re not a member\, won’t you consider joining?  We need a strong\, powerful Sierra Club nationally\, statewide and locally for the uncertain and challenging days ahead under a Trump administration.  Contribute what you can to a donation jar for Oregon Sierra Club’s Political Action Committee (PAC) to strengthen our state and local political program supporting strong environmental candidates and to fight threats to existing clean air and water\, climate and other guardian laws we’ve worked so hard to implement. \nBring a friend\, come share an evening with like-minded nature and planet protectors!

SUMMARY:Free LED Program Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:You may have heard that we have some very exciting news for 2017 –we have our expanded our free LED light bulb installation program to serve Redmond and Tumalo! \nWe have already reached 2\,400 homes in Bend and our goal is to reach another 600 homes in the next 6 months. To put that in perspective\, that would help save another ~$60\,000 annually in energy costs. To reach 600 homes\, we need 600 people to sign up for LEDs. That’s A LOT of people. Right now\, our biggest obstacle is getting the word out and getting people to sign up. If our costs get too high to market this program\, we may not be able to sustain it. \nThis is where YOU can play a vital role in helping people save energy—letting them know that this amazing opportunity exists.  \nIf you are interesting helping out\, we will be hosting a volunteer training to help you get more familiar with the LED program. If you plan on coming\, or are interested in volunteering and can’t make the training\, please email Neil(at)envirocenter.org or calling 541-385-6908 x26.  \nHanging Posters\nWe need volunteers to help hang posters in Redmond\, Tumalo\, and Bend. Posters can be picked up at The Environmental Center or dropped off to you in Redmond. \nTabling at Local Businesses\nA great way to reach people is meeting them where they already go. We have had great success set up informational tables with sign up sheets at grocery stores and coffee shops. You can set the times that you are interested in tabling! We will provide all the materials you need.  If you have a business that you think might be interested\, you can set up a table there\, or choose from businesses that we have already set up relationships with. \nKnocking on Doors\nWe have also had great success with canvassing neighborhoods and talking directly to people at their homes. Some people won’t want to talk to you and some will be over the moon that you just told them that can save $100 a year on utility bills and that you will help them do it for free.

SUMMARY:Bend Solidarity March
DESCRIPTION:In solidarity with the Women’s March on Washington\, and similar actions occurring throughout the nation\, the Juniper Group of the Sierra Club will join a coalition of local groups and individuals to encourage your participation in the BEND SOLIDARITY MARCH on January 21. \n“This family-friendly event will highlight the power of  intersectional communities in resistance against hate\, fear and oppression in all its forms. We will stand up with one voice about all progressive issues. We are feminists\, we are people of color\, we are planet protectors\, we are LGBTQI\, we are allies\, we are seniors\, we are teachers and healers\, mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters. We are everyone and we  are strong.” \nDETAILS: Assemble at Drake Park at 11 AM. \nAfter a short rally\, we will orderly march on the sidewalks via a designated route through downtown Bend\, ending at Riverfront Park (Crow’s Feet Commons) off Brooks Alley behind the Tower Theater. \nAt the Commons we will listen to a few short speakers\, be entertained by music\, and will also have an “open mic” format through which groups or individuals may briefly express VALUES  and actions we may consider to defend those values. \nAdditional information about the Bend Solidarity March can also be found at the WOMEN’S MARCH BEND Facebook Page.

SUMMARY:Forest 'restoration' and biomass: trouble for Central Oregon?
DESCRIPTION:Take a trip up the Cascades Highway and you’ll see what the Forest Service is doing in the name of ‘restoration’. This is just the beginning of an extensive\, but questionable\, attempt to preclude large wildfires in the Deschutes National Forest. \nThe slash piles from these fuel reduction efforts are slated to feed local biomass projects. Biomass is being hyped as “green” renewable energy\, yet is anything but that considering its carbon and air pollution impacts. \nIn this talk\, we will present research debunking forest ‘restoration’ and biomass myths. \nQ&A to follow. Seating limited\, sign up today. \nSpeakers: \nGeorge Wuerthner is an ecologist who has published 38 books including ‘Wildfire: A Century of Failed Forest Policy.’ Hans van Naerssen is a local environmentalist and former international business/government consultant. \nModerator: Laurie Lakin

SUMMARY:January Nature Night
DESCRIPTION:My life on trails—what a cougar taught me about conservation\nTrails play a major role in the life of many Central Oregonians—whether in city parks or mountain wilderness. But have you ever thought about how those trails came to be? Join 27-year Deschutes National Forest trails specialist John Schubert for an evening on trails. Learn about the rich history of trails and how contemporary design\, construction\, and maintenance strive to minimize our impacts on nature. Finally\, John\, renowned trail designer and bridge builder across the country\, will share tips on how people who love trails can reduce their own impacts while using them. This presentation is free\, but you must get your ticket online. \nNature Nights will be held January-March at the Tower Theatre. Each presentation is designed to bring the nature of Central Oregon to the community. For many of us\, it bridges the winter gap in birding and hiking\, for others it offers a front row seat to the wonders of the world that would otherwise never be seen. Regardless\, we hope you’ll join us! All Nature Nights are free and start at 7pm at the Tower Theatre in Bend. We recommend getting your tickets early as Nature Nights tend to sell out fast!
