SUMMARY:Birding By Ear
DESCRIPTION:The East Cascades Audubon Society will be kicking off another season of Birding By Ear guided birdwalks in March. Dave Tracy will be leading walks each Tuesday thru mid-June and we look forward to seeing what migrants will be showing up over the course of the upcoming spring season. \nWe’ll meet at Sawyer Park along the Deschutes River starting at 8:00am. \nAttendance is FREE and ALL AGES and skill levels are welcome to attend. Bring your binoculars and be prepared for chilly weather\, so dress warm with gloves and appropriate footwear. Typical time and distances will vary\, but generally the walk will from 1.5-3 miles long over the course of a 1.5-2 hour walk. \nOur objective will be for all to have an enjoyable time and get to know our local birds better\, by sight as well as by ear. We will focus early on getting to know the relatively small number of resident and wintering birds and then share the excitement as we note the arrival of neotropical migrant wrens\, vireos\, swallows\, swifts and others. The morning chorus will fill the air with song over the next few months\, and knowing the bird vocalizations adds another level of enjoyment and strengthens our connection to nature as we soak in this wonderful seasonal phenomenon. \nContact Dave Tracy for more information. Tel (541) 390-9931. \nVisit the East Cascades Audubon Society’s website for more information.

SUMMARY:Dean Hall Woodpecker Festival
DESCRIPTION:Organized by the East Cascades Audubon Society and started in 2011\, the Dean Hall Woodpecker Festival is an opportunity to visit a beautiful area and enjoy our local birds.  There are 11 nesting species of woodpeckers here and there is a good chance to see them all … as well as lots of other cool birds.  The group keep things low key\, fun and casual.  Local birders lead the tours (at least 2 tour leaders per group) and group size is restricted by the Forest Service.  Birders follow ethical birding practices\, minimize play backs and have strict protocols about approaching nests.  The festival is focused on field trips and meeting other birders.  It is inexpensive and all people will car pool (arranged on the day of the tour).  Participants provide your own lunch.  The group takes participants to the birding spots and we all find the birds. \nThe East Cascades Audubon Society runs this festival and it is totally managed by volunteers.  We want to share our enthusiasm\, help you to see great birds\, and have a fun time. \nFor more information\, including fee information\, registration\, maps\, and other festival logistics\, please visit the East Cascades Audubon Society’s Dean Hall Woodpecker Festival website.

SUMMARY:Birder's Night
DESCRIPTION:Birder’s Night  \nSo Much White:  Is it Snow or Snow Geese \nEach spring over 200\,000 Snow and Ross’s Geese migrate through the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.  For the past sixteen years\, Kelly Hazen has volunteered her time to study Ross’s and Snow Geese as they rest and feed at Malheur during their northbound migration.  She has read the neck collars of over 1\,700 Snow and Ross’s Geese thus contributing to understanding adult survival rates\, migration timing\, and migration patterns. Join Kelly to learn about the identifying features of these species\, including their rare Blue Phase type.  Also\, learn how to read neck collars and study fascinating details about these long distance migrating geese. \nThe program begins at 6:30 PM at the Environmental Center\, 16 NW Kansas in Bend for social time and treats. A discussion covering local birding and birding events begins at 7:00 PM\, with Kelly Hazen’s talk from 7:30 to 8:30. ECAS members\, friends\, neighbors and Central Oregon visitors are all welcome. \nFor more information\, visit the East Cascades Audubon Society’s webpage.
