SUMMARY:Water & Volcanoes in Central Oregon
DESCRIPTION:What do volcanoes have to do with your water supply? The volcanic landscapes of Central Oregon have shaped the hydrology of this area in surprising ways\, giving us one of the most unique groundwater systems in the western United States. Spring fed rivers and streams in central Oregon are directly connected to groundwater systems\, which provide steady flows and cool water temperatures. How have volcanoes created this special connection between groundwater and surface water? What does this connection tell us about water use in Central Oregon and the impacts of withdrawing groundwater for development? \nDaniele McKay studies volcanoes and teaches geology courses at Oregon State University-Cascades. She graduated with a PhD in geology from the University of Oregon in 2012\, where she studied recent volcanic eruptions in the Cascades. Much of this research involved mapping ash deposits produced by cinder cones in Central Oregon and comparing them to similar eruptions in Iceland\, Mexico\, and other parts of the world. \nRegister soon as this will fill up fast! \nJoin us for refreshments when the doors open at 3:30 p.m.; the presentation starts at 4:00 p.m.  FANs members are admitted free; non-members pay $1 at the door. \nWater & Volcanoes in Central Oregon\nSaturday\, January 24th 3:30 – 5:00pm \nJuniper Room\, Crooked River Ranch Club House \nPlease Register by clicking here.

She and nine fellow DeWolf descendants set off to retrace the Triangle Trade: from their old hometown in Rhode Island to slave forts in Ghana to sugar plantation ruins in Cuba. Step by step\, they uncover the vast extent of Northern complicity in slavery while also stumbling through the minefield of contemporary race relations.  Featured by PBS on POV\, Documentaries with a Point of view. \nTom DeWolf\, a Bendite\, author of Inheriting the Trade and Gather at the Table\, and one of the descendants featured in the film\, will answer questions about the film.  He will introduce Coming to the Table\, an organization dedicated to healing racial wounds of the past.

SUMMARY:Sunriver Audubon Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:The Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory is pleased to announce they will be hosting a new Audubon Christmas Bird Count Circle for the 115th Audubon Christmas Bird Count. \nBetween December 14\, 2014 and January 5\, 2015\, hawk-eyed volunteers across the country will brave various weather conditions to count birds during the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC). \nOn Saturday\, January 3\, 2015\, birders and nature enthusiasts in Sunriver will take part in this tradition\, many rising before dawn to participate in the longest running wildlife census on the planet. \nVolunteers are needed to participate in field walks and also to count the birds at your own backyard feeder. \nThe new 15-mile diameter count circle includes all of Sunriver and is bounded by Route 372 on the north\, Sheridan Mountain on the west\, the southern boundary of LaPine State Park to the south\, and Route 97on the east. Elevations range from 4200 feet to 6890 feet within the count circle. The variety of habitats in the circle are home to an interesting diversity of bird species. To learn more about how you can participate\, call Compiler James Little at (541) 593-4442 or email. \nField participants will meet at 7 am on January 3rd at the Pozzi Building located at the Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory to pick up Count forms and directions. Territories will be arranged at that time. Those new to birding will be paired with experienced birders. \nEach year\, the Audubon Christmas Bird Count mobilizes over 70\,000 volunteer bird counters in more than 2\,400 locations across the Western Hemisphere. \nThe Audubon Christmas Bird Count utilizes the power of volunteers to track the health of bird populations at a scale that professional scientists could never accomplish alone. Data compiled in Sunriver will record every individual bird and bird species seen in a specified area\, contributing to a vast citizen science network that continues a tradition stretching back more than 100 years. \n“This is not just about counting birds\,” says Gary Langham\, Audubon’s Chief Scientist. “Data from the Audubon Christmas Bird Count are at the heart of hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific studies and inform decisions made by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\, the Department of the Interior\, and the EPA. Because birds are early indicators of environmental threats to habitats we share\, this is a vital survey of North America and\, increasingly\, the Western Hemisphere.” \nThe Audubon Christmas Bird Count began in 1900 when Dr. Frank Chapman\, founder of Bird-Lore—which evolved into Audubon Magazine\,– suggested an alternative to the holiday “side hunt” where teams competed to see who could shoot the most birds. The annual Christmas Bird Count is a Citizen Science project organized by the National Audubon Society. There is no fee to participate and the annual published report\, American Birds\, is available online. \nThe nearby Bend Audubon Count is normally held on the first Saturday of the count period while the Sunriver Audubon Count is set up for the third Saturday in the count period. This provided an opportunity for birders from Bend to participate as well. For more information\, call SNCO Executive Director James Little at (541) 593-4442. \nPlease call James Little for more information: (541) 593-4442 \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Peer Exchange Call: Combining Solar & Home Performance Services
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/759015944 \nJoin the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s Better Buildings Residential Network on Thursday\, December 11\, from 3:00-4:30 PM Eastern Time for a peer exchange call on the topic of Combining Solar and Home Performance Services. The call will explore how to deliver cost-effective solutions for homeowners to increase comfort and reduce energy bills. For background on this topic\, refer to the article “The Struggle to Combine Energy Efficiency and Solar Power\,” which describes how programs have structured services and incentives that helped customers make cost-effective choices about energy efficiency measures and solar technology. According to the article\, “Programs for solar and efficiency are in separate silos. Installers do not collaborate as effectively as they could. When solar companies do not address energy efficiency in tandem with solar power\, systems can be oversized – increasing costs for homeowners.” \nWe’ll hear from representatives of two organizations profiled in the article who will discuss their knowledge and experience about combining solar and home performance services:\n• Tim Harvey\, Austin Energy\n• Ria Langheim\, Center for Sustainable Energy
