SUMMARY:Remembering the Legacy of Pete Seeger
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Central Oregon Community College Multicultural Center Season of Nonviolence. \nIn 1963\, Pete Seeger performed a concert at Carnegie Hall. He and his family were preparing to leave the U.S.\, not knowing for sure if they would ever return.  The evening’s selections were poignant\, vibrant\, political\, ironic\, and FUN. The common threads between the tunes were a love for humankind and advocacy of peace and justice.  It is our hope to recreate the spirit of that special evening by performing the same set-list as was presented at Carnegie Hall… in hopes that everyone will join along in singing… honoring the first anniversary of his passing. \nWille Hall\, Campus Center\, Bend Campus of COCC

SUMMARY:Maker Monday: Repair Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rethink Waste Project and the Bend Downtown Library to kick off their new monthly Maker Monday series with a Small Appliance Repair Cafe!  Volunteers will be on hand to try and fix your broken toasters\, blenders\, vacuums and any small appliance you may have that just isn’t working. \nA repair cafe is a free event that connects people with broken stuff with people who like to fix stuff. It’s an opportunity to connect with our stuff\, instead of just replacing it and making even more waste. Every effort will be made to fix the items but we will be limited by skills\, expertise\, parts and time\, so patience and a DIY attitude is helpful. \nThe Maker Monday series is an initiative for the Downtown Bend Library to bring DIY type events and workshops to the community. Rethink Waste is a project of The Envrionmental Center and helps our community reduce\, reuse\, recycle and compost.

SUMMARY:Water & Volcanoes in Central Oregon
DESCRIPTION:What do volcanoes have to do with your water supply? The volcanic landscapes of Central Oregon have shaped the hydrology of this area in surprising ways\, giving us one of the most unique groundwater systems in the western United States. Spring fed rivers and streams in central Oregon are directly connected to groundwater systems\, which provide steady flows and cool water temperatures. How have volcanoes created this special connection between groundwater and surface water? What does this connection tell us about water use in Central Oregon and the impacts of withdrawing groundwater for development? \nDaniele McKay studies volcanoes and teaches geology courses at Oregon State University-Cascades. She graduated with a PhD in geology from the University of Oregon in 2012\, where she studied recent volcanic eruptions in the Cascades. Much of this research involved mapping ash deposits produced by cinder cones in Central Oregon and comparing them to similar eruptions in Iceland\, Mexico\, and other parts of the world. \nRegister soon as this will fill up fast! \nJoin us for refreshments when the doors open at 3:30 p.m.; the presentation starts at 4:00 p.m.  FANs members are admitted free; non-members pay $1 at the door. \nWater & Volcanoes in Central Oregon\nSaturday\, January 24th 3:30 – 5:00pm \nJuniper Room\, Crooked River Ranch Club House \nPlease Register by clicking here.

SUMMARY:Sunriver Audubon Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:The Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory is pleased to announce they will be hosting a new Audubon Christmas Bird Count Circle for the 115th Audubon Christmas Bird Count. \nBetween December 14\, 2014 and January 5\, 2015\, hawk-eyed volunteers across the country will brave various weather conditions to count birds during the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC). \nOn Saturday\, January 3\, 2015\, birders and nature enthusiasts in Sunriver will take part in this tradition\, many rising before dawn to participate in the longest running wildlife census on the planet. \nVolunteers are needed to participate in field walks and also to count the birds at your own backyard feeder. \nThe new 15-mile diameter count circle includes all of Sunriver and is bounded by Route 372 on the north\, Sheridan Mountain on the west\, the southern boundary of LaPine State Park to the south\, and Route 97on the east. Elevations range from 4200 feet to 6890 feet within the count circle. The variety of habitats in the circle are home to an interesting diversity of bird species. To learn more about how you can participate\, call Compiler James Little at (541) 593-4442 or email. \nField participants will meet at 7 am on January 3rd at the Pozzi Building located at the Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory to pick up Count forms and directions. Territories will be arranged at that time. Those new to birding will be paired with experienced birders. \nEach year\, the Audubon Christmas Bird Count mobilizes over 70\,000 volunteer bird counters in more than 2\,400 locations across the Western Hemisphere. \nThe Audubon Christmas Bird Count utilizes the power of volunteers to track the health of bird populations at a scale that professional scientists could never accomplish alone. Data compiled in Sunriver will record every individual bird and bird species seen in a specified area\, contributing to a vast citizen science network that continues a tradition stretching back more than 100 years. \n“This is not just about counting birds\,” says Gary Langham\, Audubon’s Chief Scientist. “Data from the Audubon Christmas Bird Count are at the heart of hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific studies and inform decisions made by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\, the Department of the Interior\, and the EPA. Because birds are early indicators of environmental threats to habitats we share\, this is a vital survey of North America and\, increasingly\, the Western Hemisphere.” \nThe Audubon Christmas Bird Count began in 1900 when Dr. Frank Chapman\, founder of Bird-Lore—which evolved into Audubon Magazine\,– suggested an alternative to the holiday “side hunt” where teams competed to see who could shoot the most birds. The annual Christmas Bird Count is a Citizen Science project organized by the National Audubon Society. There is no fee to participate and the annual published report\, American Birds\, is available online. \nThe nearby Bend Audubon Count is normally held on the first Saturday of the count period while the Sunriver Audubon Count is set up for the third Saturday in the count period. This provided an opportunity for birders from Bend to participate as well.
