SUMMARY:November Green Drinks @ The NEW Gear Fix
DESCRIPTION:Every other month\, The Environmental Center and our Green Spot business partners host Green Drinks – a networking event with a mix of business and community members. \nKeeping Gear (and People) Going!\nThis month\, we’ll be checking out The Gear Fix’s new space. This shop is an important part of our outdoor community here in Bend\, and we’re excited to see them expanding to a larger space – twice the size of their old location (or 7\,000 square feet to be exact). The new space\, built around 1915\, has some history behind it too. It used to be a “box factory” as part of the Mill! \nThe Gear Fix is a consignment shop that specializes in repairing and servicing any gear that gets you outside. If you can repair your favorite jacket\, a reliable backpack or a great pair of boots instead of buying something new – why wouldn’t you? Repairing instead of replacing prevents waste and saves resources! \nGoing forward\, this larger space will allow the Gear Fix team to bring their repair shop down to ground level where consumers can see repairs in action while shopping around. Making this service visible and highlighting repairs will allow Gear Fix to encourage people to treat their purchases like an investment\, and to think twice before disposing any gear. Of course\, we love this concept! \nCome learn more about what Gear Fix is all about and what they have in store for 2016. \nPlease note the new address: 550 Industrial Way in Old Mill Marketplace. (Not to be confused with “The Old Mill”!) Located between Webcylery & Atlas Cider.  \nGreen Drinks is an international concept and is an enjoyable way to network\, learn about local businesses and their sustainability efforts\, and have an eco-conscious drink or two!  Bring your own cup and consider carpooling\, walking\, biking or transit to get to the event! \n

SUMMARY:Mile\, Mile & a Half\, a film about the John Muir Trail
DESCRIPTION:What:   Mile\, Mile & a Half\, a film about the John Muir Trail\nWhen:  Wednesday\, November 18\, 7:00 pm\nWhere:   Environmental Center\, 16 NW Kansas\, Bend\nSponsor:   Sierra Club\nCost:   $3 donation at the door\, popcorn and snacks\nWho:   Open to the Public\nContact:  Gretchen Valido\, 541-389-0785\n \nIn an epic snow year\, five friends leave their daily lives behind to hike California’s historic John Muir Trail\, a 211-mile stretch from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney (the highest peak in the contiguous U.S.). Their goal—complete the journey in 25 days while capturing the amazing sights and sounds they encounter along the way. Inspired by their bond\, humor\, artistry and dedication\, the group continues to grow to include other artists\, musicians and adventure seekers. Before they all reach the summit\, hikers and viewers alike affirm the old saying\, it’s about the journey\, not the destination. Mile… Mile & A Half is the feature-length documentary of that journey.

SUMMARY:America Recycles Day
DESCRIPTION:A nation-wide day to celebrate recycling!\nAmerica Recycles Day aims to educate and increase the amount Americans collectively recycle. This national awareness effort is an initiative by Keep America Beautiful\, an organization committed to helping citizens\, businesses and governments to find solutions to preventing and reducing waste and beautifying communities. \nThousands of events take place across the country in honor of America Recycles Day! We hope you’ll participate by amping up the efforts a bit today. In Bend\, the Rethink Waste Project Repair Cafe on November 14-15 would be a great event to attend. Come repair your items (for free!) instead of replacing them. \nHow else do you plan to participate? Check out the Rethink Waste website for ideas and resources on how to reduce waste – not just today\, but all year long.

SUMMARY:Herbs for Winter Health
DESCRIPTION:It is commonly recognized that human life depends upon Nature’s plants by virtue of the fact that they give us the oxygen we breathe\, and the food we eat. What modern people have largely forgotten\, however\, is that the wild plants-growing around us on all sides- harmonize so perfectly with our bodies that most of them\, used wisely\, can effectively counteract and heal countless imbalances and illnesses of body and soul\, without harmful “side effects.”\nIn this class we will consider several of the important wild medicinal plants of the Oregon Cascades\, and how they can help us overcome a variety of winter woes – colds\, flu\, respiratory disorders\, sore throat\, cold extremities\, depression\, environmental toxicity\, digestive trouble\, etc. We’ll see how they can be most easily and effectively taken\, and combined into formulas for chronic disorders.\nKeith will offer samples of the herbal extracts\, elixirs\, teas and salves of which we speak\, for all to experience directly. A selection of his products will be available for sale after the presentation. The cost of the class is $10-$20 (sliding scale) per person. Childcare is provided for free.

SUMMARY:Video Screening: This Changes Everything
DESCRIPTION:From November 9-15th\, the New Economy Coalition will host New Economy Week – a public conversation around ideas that can transform society and build an economy where people and the planet matter. Come celebrate New Economy Week at a screening of This Changes Everything (a film based on Naomi Klein’s bestseller) right here in Bend! \nFilmed over 211 shoot days in nine countries and five continents over four years\, This Changes Everything is an epic attempt to re-imagine the vast challenge of climate change. \nDirected by Avi Lewis\, and inspired by Naomi Klein’s international non-fiction bestseller\, the film presents seven powerful portraits of communities on the front lines\, from Montana’s Powder River Basin to the Alberta Tar Sands\, from the coast of South India to Beijing and beyond. \nInterwoven with these stories of struggle is Klein’s narration\, connecting the carbon in the air with the economic system that put it there. Throughout the film\, Klein builds to her most controversial and exciting idea: that we can seize the existential crisis of climate change to transform our failed economic system into something radically better. \nPresented in partnership by the New Economy Coalition\, Level Magazine\, 3EStrategies and The Environmental Center.\nSuggested $5 donation at the door in support of The Environmental Center.

SUMMARY:Rock\, River\, and Recharge: the Amazing Riviere des Chutes
DESCRIPTION:What do volcanoes have to do with the water you drink? The volcanic landscape of Central Oregon has shaped the hydrology of this area in surprising ways. Rain and snowmelt seep into the young volcanic rocks\, only to resurface later as springs throughout the watershed. \nThe Deschutes River\, the life-blood of our high desert home\, is an amazing river. A 1914 U.S. Reclamation Service report referred to the Deschutes as “one of the most uniform of all streams in the United States\, not only from month to month\, but also from year to year.” It is a very different story today. \nJoin us as we delve into the details of the remarkable hydrogeology of this region\, and learn about how the natural system has changed over the past century. \nRegister for the event – the Brooks Room has a capacity limit of 80 people! \nPresenters: Daniele McKay\, PhD\, Volcanologist and Adjunct Instructor at OSU-Cascades; Gail Snyder\, Program Director\, Central Oregon LandWatch. \nCo-Hosted with Great Old Broads for Wilderness
