SUMMARY:Happy Hour in the Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us in our Kansas Avenue Learning Garden for our ongoing volunteer work party series. In 2022\, volunteers contributed over 200 hours to help keep our learning garden maintained over the growing season. We couldn’t do it without you! \nThis event is open to all ages and gardening abilities! No experience or tools required. Beer and non-alcoholic beverages are provided for all who volunteer. Each event includes seasonal ongoing tasks as well as special projects as needed throughout the growing season. Volunteers are welcome to pop in for an hour or stay the whole time. No need to RSVP or commit ahead of time. (Pro tip – put the following dates in your phone calendar now – then when it pops up you can decide if it works out for you or not!) \nIn 2023\, Happy Hour in the Garden will once again run twice a month from March through October. DESCRIPTION:In the finale of ONDA’s 2022 High Desert Speaker Series\, professor Arthur Middleton will cover the basic ecology of ungulate migrations in the western United States. He’ll then profile threats to these migrations\, including climate and land-use change\, as well as barriers to migration like roads and fences. With a nod to the future\, Arthur will also discuss some emerging models and opportunities for collaborative conservation of important migrations — all more relevant than ever to Oregon’s high desert and the species that move through the sagebrush sea. \n*Registration will open on March 19 and close two hours before the event begins.

SUMMARY:Climate Change and Glacier Health
DESCRIPTION:Upper Deschutes Watershed Council is coordinating a six-part informational speaker series about Whychus Creek and its watershed! They are working with natural resource partners to present an educational watershed series for community members to learn about the history\, hydrology\, habitat conditions\, native fish\, water conservation\, stream restoration activities\, and ways that YOU can become an engaged steward for Whychus Creek. They will coordinate each session with presentations from their partners from the Deschutes National Forest\, Deschutes River Conservancy\, Oregon Water Resource Department\, the Fly FIsher’s Place\, the City of Sisters\, Three Sisters Irrigation District\, and others. The series will culminate with an in-person tour of restoration projects along Whychus Creek. \nThe speaker series will be held at the Sisters Library.  All presentations will be delivered in-person with a virtual attendance option. SUMMARY:The Energy Equity Project
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Equity Project is working to create a framework for measuring equity across energy efficiency and clean energy programs among utilities\, state regulatory agencies\, and other practitioners\, while engaging and centering Black\, Brown\, and Indigenous communities and frontline communities. An equity measurement framework\, set to launch in beta form in 2022\, will serve environmental and climate justice advocates\, practitioners\, regulatory agencies\, and utilities to drive more equitable investments and outcomes in energy efficiency\, distributed generation and storage (i.e. solar + batteries)\, demand response\, electrification\, and electric vehicle infrastructure. The presentation will offer an overview of EEP’s work\, including the energy equity issues it addresses in urban contexts\, and an update on the framework being developed and the stakeholder engagement process.

SUMMARY:Round Butte Clean Up
DESCRIPTION:Round Butte is a dormant\, shield volcano located between Madras and Culver. This beautiful area is popular with locals and visitors alike. From the top\, you are treated to a 360-degree view of the snow capped Cascade Range from Mt. Bachelor to Mt. Hood\, Madras to the north and Culver and open desert dotted with buttes to the south and east. It is a great place to enjoy fresh air and get plenty of sunshine. Depending on our spring weather\, balsamroot and lupine may just be beginning to bloom. The area is also used as an off-highway vehicle course and shooting range; unfortunately\, some who use it leave garbage\, pallets\, tires\, appliances\, old targets\, shell casings and more littering the once pristine area. Last year\, volunteers picked up more than 5 tons of micro litter\, household and building materials waste\, and invasive weeds. The Butte needs your help again this Earth Day. Please join SOLVE and the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department to clean up Round Butte. Volunteers are needed to pick up litter. \nVolunteer Limit: 10

DESCRIPTION:Greenhouse Design for All-Season Growing taught by Eileen Obermiller\, Landscape Architect \nWhat can I expect to germinate\, grow\, and harvest with a residential All-Season Greenhouse? How much effort does it take to make it work?  How is a residential All-Season Greenhouse different from a typical greenhouse? Does it need winter heating? What happens when temperatures drop to minus 20 degrees? Won’t it overheat in the summer? We will answer these questions focusing on which vegetables are best suited for summer verses winter growing\, when to plant those seeds\, and how to prolong harvests.  We will discuss strategies for collecting and storing heat as well as other important considerations in the design of a residential All-Season Greenhouse. \n​
