SUMMARY:Alder Springs Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join Central Oregon LandWatch for a moderate to strenuous walk down into the scenic lower Whychus Creek Canyon to Alder Springs. We will check out the confluence of the creek with the thundering Deschutes River below a towering wedge of rimrock on this premier Central Oregon hike. \nWatch for wildflowers\, raptors\, songbirds\, lizards\, and rattlesnakes enjoying the last bit of summer. This western portion of the Crooked River National Grassland is part of a mosaic of public and private lands that Central Oregon LandWatch is working to protect as important wildlife habitat\, winter range\, and a migration corridor between the Cascades and the Ochocos. \nThe drive from Bend to the trailhead is about 1 hour\, the last few miles of which are on a rough dirt road – high clearance\, 4WD strongly recommended. Please volunteer to drive if you have a rig that can handle this. \nThe approximately 6 mile round-trip hike is moderately to strenuous\, with a fair amount of elevation loss on the way out and gain on the way back. The hike can get hot and dusty. Bring: sun sauce\, bug sauce\, hiking boots\, shades\, a hat\, lunch\, and plenty of water. \nWe will meet in Bend at 9:00am for the carpool. All attendees will be asked to pitch in for gas. \nPlease note: As is often the case for hikers in this area\, we may encounter rattlesnakes on this hike.

SUMMARY:A Natives Perspective on American Indian History
DESCRIPTION:When Europeans arrived in North America more than 500 years ago\, they brought with them different cultural customs which soon spread across the land\, causing great loss of life and disruption of indigenous lives and cultures. Politically\, the dominant European City-State model permeated the continent\, and indigenous people were essentially forced to sign treaties that constructed sovereign tribal nations that in many cases bore little relationship to the traditional social structure and alliances. \nPre-registration is requested\, but not required. Register on line at trinitybend.org/education.

SUMMARY:Native Plant Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 25th\, at 9:00 am FANs is offering a two-hour native plant workshop with Marilynne Keyser.  We will meet at the Juniper room in the Crooked River Ranch administration building for a slide presentation on the most common native shrubs\, bunchgrasses and wildflowers in the local sagebrush community.   After the presentation\, Marilynne will give a tour of the new Crooked River Ranch Native Plant Interpretive Garden\, created by FANs in conjunction with staff of Crooked River Ranch.  Over 500 plants of 36 native species were planted by volunteers in May and June of 2014.  Interpretive signs and plant labels will be added in 2015.  The garden is located by the tennis courts\, near the administration building. \nFANs will be selling native bunchgrasses in one or two gallon pots at the garden immediately following the workshop. \nThis workshops will provide valuable material\, including color photographs to take home.  FANs is requesting a $15 donation for the workshop to cover printing costs and to support the native garden.  We need to know how many people are coming so that we have enough materials available. Please contact Marilynne Keyser at 541-923-0558 or mtkeyser@gmail.com  for more information and to register for the workshop.  You can pay on the day of the workshop with either cash or a check made out to FANs.  Your contributions are tax-deductible as FANs is a 501c3 nonprofit organization.
