SUMMARY:Fire and Water: Hydrogeology of Central Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Join volcanologist Dr. Daniele McKay for a fascinating presentation about the unique hydrogeology of the Deschutes River basin. \nThe volcanic landscape of Central Oregon has shaped the hydrology of this area in surprising ways. The Deschutes River was known as the “Peculiar River” because of its historically stable year-round flows. Rain and snowmelt rapidly infiltrate through the young volcanic rocks and resurface later as springs that feed our rivers. Join us as we dig deeper into this remarkable system. \nDaniele has a PhD in geology from the University of Oregon. She studies volcanic activity and has focused much of her research on central Oregon volcanoes. She is a very active member of the community and volunteers for a variety of natural resource related organizations.

SUMMARY:Lookout Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Sign up now for a moderate to strenuous hike up Lookout Mountain on Sunday\, July 10th with Central Oregon Landwatch. This will be a beautiful hike with scenic views of Big Summit Prairie and stunning views of the Cascades.  If it’s a clear day we might see Snow Mountain and the Strawberry Mountains to the east. \nAmy Stuart (former Deschutes Watershed Manager) and Greg Jackle (Ochoco District Wildlife Biologist) will guide us and share their expertise in wildlife issues and lead discussions on how the Off-Highway Vehicle trail proposal in the Ochocos could impact deer\, elk\, and redband trout. In addition to our hike leaders\, our board president “The Nathan” will be along to increase the fun factor and help us identify birds and their songs. \nThis is rated as a MODERATE to STRENUOUS hike\, approximately 4.5 miles in distance with an elevation gain of 1\,220 feet. The summit is 6926 ft of elevation. We will be bush whacking out across open country and meadows and through a few stringer stands to avoid all the blow down that fire crews haven’t been able to get to this year. \nSign up here \nWhen: Meet in Bend for carpool at 7:30am Sunday\, July 10th\, return by mid-afternoon (more details for registrants)\nWhere: Lookout Mountain in the Ochoco National Forest\nHow: Sign up here\nWhy: Get out in nature with us and learn more about our programs!

DESCRIPTION:Let’s continue the fun and improve our fly casting! We’re going to meet every Tuesday evening in June and July for casual\, self-guided practice. This is not a class\, it’s free and no RSVP required! Just show up and enjoy time with fellow fly fishers! There won’t be instructors\, but we have many terrific casters amongst our group. \nDon’t be afraid to ask for help! \nMeet at hole #10 (near Chico’s) if you want to join others or head out on your own. Scorecards with the map are available at Confluence Fly Shop or at the Ticket Mill. \nQuestions? Contact Karen Kreft: nextcast@coflyfishers.org \nFor more information about the Old Mill Fly Casting Course see the COF May 2016 newsletter\, page 10 (https://coflyfishers.wildapricot.org/resources/Documents/Newsletters/Archive/maynews/May16.pdf)
