DESCRIPTION:Save the date! The Land Trust is pleased to present its 2023 Nature Nights series. \nThe magnificent ponderosa pine and mixed conifer forests of Central Oregon provide wildlife habitat\, clean water\, and outstanding outdoor experiences for many people. But these forests are changing rapidly and may not provide the same benefits in the years to come. Join the Deschutes Land Trust\, Dr. James Johnston\, and Dr. Andrew Merschel of Oregon State University as they share the results of ongoing tree ring research that describes 500 years of change in forests of Central Oregon. They’ll show how they look at old-growth trees as living time capsules that document fire\, insect attacks\, and birth and death. Learn about the future of Central Oregon’s old-growth forests as they face the challenges of climate change and fire. This presentation is free and ticket sales open one month prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Happy Hour in the Garden Kickoff
DESCRIPTION:Join us in our Kansas Avenue Learning Garden for our ongoing volunteer work party series. In 2022\, volunteers contributed over 200 hours to help keep our learning garden maintained over the growing season. We couldn’t do it without you! \nThis event is open to all ages and gardening abilities! No experience or tools required. Beer and non-alcoholic beverages are provided for all who volunteer. Each event includes seasonal ongoing tasks as well as special projects as needed throughout the growing season. Volunteers are welcome to pop in for an hour or stay the whole time. No need to RSVP or commit ahead of time. (Pro tip – put the following dates in your phone calendar now – then when it pops up you can decide if it works out for you or not!) \nIn 2023\, Happy Hour in the Garden will once again run twice a month from March through October. SUMMARY:Downtown Bend: Landscape Painting & the Conservation Movement
DESCRIPTION:Explore the connection between art\, conservation and National Parks. \nThis is an in-person program. Masks are optional at all in-person library events. \nThis presentation examines the long association between art\, conservation\, and National Parks\, focusing on a group of landscape painters led by a young English immigrant named Thomas Cole that came to be known as the Hudson River School. The talk covers the birth of the American conservation movement\, its expression in national parks\, and the role of landscape painting in advancing conservation in the United States. It seeks to answer the fundamental question\, “Why do we conserve?” In addition to Thomas Cole\, the presentation describes the impact of other artists on American conservation and national parks\, including Frederic Church\, Sanford Robinson Gifford\, Albert Bierstadt\, Thomas Moran\, and Asher Durand. \nJames Gramann is a Professor Emeritus of Park and Conservation Policy from Texas A&M University. A native of the Pacific Northwest\, he retired to Redmond\, Oregon\, in 2017. From 2002 through 2010\, while on leave from Texas A&M\, he worked full-time in Washington\, D.C.\, as the visiting chief social scientist for the U.S. National Park Service. In this capacity\, he directed a national social science program providing usable knowledge about people and parks to national park managers\, planners\, and policy-makers. In 2010\, his program received the Department of the Interior’s Unit Award for Excellence of Service. In 2015\, the George Wright Society honored him with its Social Science Achievement Award for advancing the application of social science to the management of protected areas and cultural sites. He has a strong interest in the history of American conservation and national parks and has authored over 100 articles\, book chapters\, and technical reports on park-related issues.

SUMMARY:Know Underwater: What Can Algae Tell Us? at Redmond Prof. Academy
DESCRIPTION:Explore the future of aquatic ecosystems with algae research. \nThis is an in-person program. Masks are optional at all in-person library events. \nAlgae come in all shapes and sizes\, ranging from single spherical microscopic cells to forests of giant kelp that can extend up to 60 m. Collectively\, this diverse array of aquatic plants fuel food webs and are a key part of the global carbon cycle. Researchers have a wide range of technologies (from satellites to remotely operated submarines) that they use to observe microscopic algae called plankton that live in the surface waters of lakes\, rivers\, and oceans. This allows them to study how plankton respond to changes in their environment and what that could mean for the future climate and health of aquatic ecosystems. Macroalgae (seaweeds) could also play an important role in our future as part of a more sustainable diet or as a tool to combat the increasing amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. \nJames Fox is a research associate in the department of microbiology at Oregon State University. He received his doctorate from the University of Essex in England where he studied marine science and is currently involved in projects ranging from the monitoring of toxic algal blooms in Oregon lakes to the impact of global climate change on ocean biology. Recently he started working with an Oregon-based start-up to help grow seaweed that can be used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in cattle and provide an alternative source of protein to meat and soy. \nPresented in collaboration with The Roundhouse Foundation\, a private family foundation based in Sisters\, Oregon that supports creative solutions to the unique challenges associated with rural culture and the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. DESCRIPTION:Join professor and author John Leshy at the Tower Theater in Bend for ONDA’s event in the High Desert Speaker Series as he discusses his new book\, Our Common Ground: A History of America’s Public Lands. Professor Leshy will offer some lessons that history suggests for future public land policy\, such as how\, as he writes\, “decision making about public lands demonstrates our ability as a people to work together and find genuine common good.” He will explore contemporary challenges such as climate change\, the biodiversity crisis\, and escalating visitation\, sharing insights and perspectives important to ONDA’s conservation work across Oregon’s high desert. \nTickets go on sale in early February.
