SUMMARY:Facing the Heat: The Reality of Climate Change for Forests and Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:In the past several years\, Oregon has faced historic wildfires which have devastated people and communities\, heat waves that harmed wildlife and overwhelmed animal care centers\, and severe drought\, which is only predicted to get worse. After experiencing this summer’s heat dome across the region\, it is no wonder that climate change remains the biggest threat to our environment\, wildlife\, and communities. \nSo where do we go from here? How do we turn our care and concern into action? \nTogether with experts Dr. Erica Fleishman\, Director of the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute\, and Lynn Tompkins\, Executive Director of Blue Mountain Wildlife\, they’ll discuss the recent heatwaves\, how they impacted forests and wildlife\, and what we can do to combat climate change\, restore fragile ecosystems\, and support wildlife care centers and their incredible work to protect injured animals.

SUMMARY:Salmon 101: Understanding the Lifeblood of the Pacific Northwest
DESCRIPTION:Without a doubt\, salmon is one of the most iconic species of the Pacific Northwest. Its significance is far-reaching\, and for thousands of years\, has been at the center of cultural practices\, rituals\, and economic activities. Salmon are also an indicator species\, in that they serve as a key measure of ecosystem health and vitality. \nUnfortunately\, and in large part due to the disturbance of stream habitat from dams\, logging\, and mining\, many salmon species — of which\, Oregon has five– are facing significant declines. Now more than ever\, we need all Oregonians to speak up for this incredibly important species before it’s too late. \nWhether you are new to Oregon or a seasoned salmon expert\, join the team at Oregon Wild as they welcome spokesperson Jeremy FiveCrows of the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission. In this webcast\, he will give an overview of the various salmon species in the state and discuss the cultural and ecological importance of restoring them and their fragile habitat.

SUMMARY:Youth Climate Town Hall with Senator Wyden
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, September 10th\, The Environmental Center is teaming up with OLCV and other local environmental groups to host a Youth Climate Town Hall featuring Senator Ron Wyden! \nThis event will be led by and for young people. The focus? Creating a brighter future. We want to give young people the chance to make their voices heard\, and to talk with Senator Wyden about real-life solutions to the climate crisis that are rooted in justice\, community\, and hope. Using the form on the RSVP page\, attendees will even have the chance to submit their own questions for Senator Wyden to answer during the town hall. \nRight now\, thanks to Senator Wyden’s leadership\, Congress is coming close to making its final decisions on a once-in-a-generation opportunity for investments in clean energy\, justice\, and jobs. Senator Wyden will talk about how things are going at the national level\, and how you can get involved. \nIf you’re a young person\, RSVP here to receive more info! Or\, if you’re not exactly 24 anymore\, please pass this on to the young people in your life. Young people are the future\, and we’re constantly inspired by their creativity\, courage\, and optimism. It’s time for the next generation to take center stage\, and share their vision of the future.

SUMMARY:Gardening with Native Plants for Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Native plant gardening has been ranked as one of the top three landscape and garden trends over the past few years\, in part because of the benefits that they offer to pollinators. However\, native plants are not widely planted by home gardeners\, and only limited selections can be found at many retail nurseries. This talk will share research conducted by the OSU Garden Ecology Lab for the past four years\, and will address questions such as: \n\nWhich Willamette Valley native plants are most attractive to pollinators?\nWhy aren’t native plants more broadly available for purchase?\nWhat native plants are most attractive (according to Oregon gardeners)\, and which native plant traits gave gardeners concern?\nAre native cultivars a good approach to some of the problems associated with the production and sale of native plants?\nDo pollinators visit native cultivars as much as they do native plants?\n\nRegistration information to come.
