SUMMARY:Finding Artistic Inspiration in the High Desert
DESCRIPTION:The fourth and final High Desert Speaker Series event in Bend will conclude with a discussion of the many varied ways that desert landscapes inspire us\, featuring a panel of award-winning artists whose muse is the high desert itself: Nancy Pobanz\, Artist in Residence at the Rimrock Draw Rock Shelter archaeological site; Janet Matson\, a ceramicist and member of the Clay Guild of the Cascades; Deborah Ford\, photographer and executive director of Playa; Carla Fox\, a metalsmith and founder of Art in the High Desert; and Monica Helms\, an oil and acrylic painter specializing in wildlife. \nFrom the dramatic light and rich textures of the desert landscape\, to the resilient spirit of the land\, this talk will leave you inspired to see Oregon’s high desert through the eyes of an artist. This event will be moderated by ONDA’s Gena Goodman-Campbell. \nThis event will include a silent art auction with proceeds to benefit ONDA\, so bring your checkbooks! \nThe event will take place at Bend’s Old Stone Church. The event is free and space is limited\, so please register online to save your seat. Registration opens one month prior to this event. \n Register online today to save your seat.

SUMMARY:Fire and Water: Hydrogeology of Central Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Join volcanologist Dr. Daniele McKay for a fascinating presentation about the unique hydrogeology of the Deschutes River basin. \nThe volcanic landscape of Central Oregon has shaped the hydrology of this area in surprising ways. The Deschutes River was known as the “Peculiar River” because of its historically stable year-round flows. Rain and snowmelt rapidly infiltrate through the young volcanic rocks and resurface later as springs that feed our rivers. Join us as we dig deeper into this remarkable system. \nDaniele has a PhD in geology from the University of Oregon. She studies volcanic activity and has focused much of her research on central Oregon volcanoes. She is a very active member of the community and volunteers for a variety of natural resource related organizations.

SUMMARY:Heritage Tree Walk
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Arbor Day with a Heritage Tree walk around downtown Bend. The Heritage Tree Walk will begin at the Deschutes Historical Museum located at 129 NW Idaho in Bend. The Heritage Tree Walk will begin at 5:00 pm Friday April 28th.  The walk is free. \nDiscover the magnificent Heritage Trees tucked in and around downtown Bend.  The walk weaves together Bend’s history and the value of arboriculture in a growing community. Joining the walk will be a representative from the Deschutes Historical Society.  Hear about Bends colorful past and learn how trees have contributed to the livability of the Bend community over the past 100 years. One stop on the walk will be Oregon’s newest Heritage Tree\, the Drake Pine Grove. The Drake grove once surrounded the Alexander Drake homestead that overlooked the Deschutes River. \nThis Arbor Day event is being organized by Bend 4 Trees in conjunction with the City of Bend. Bend 4 Trees is a volunteer community group with a passion for trees.  The group initially organized to advocate for the recertification of Tree City USA for the City of Bend. Bend was designated a Tree City in 1991 and held the Tree City status until 1995. Bend regained Tree City status in 2004 and maintained it until 2012.  Bend 4 Trees believes Bend can regain the Tree City status and maintain it by changing the culture of the City and embracing the value of trees and treating them as green infrastructure. \nOne of the four standards for becoming a Tree City USA community is having an annual Arbor Day Proclamation and observance.
