SUMMARY:Know Justice: The Future of Water in Oregon at Sisters Firehouse
DESCRIPTION:How can we balance competing needs to have water for all? \nThis is an in-person program. Masks are optional at all in-person library events. \nAccess to safe\, sufficient water is designated as a fundamental human right by the United Nations\, yet thousands of Oregonians do not meet that standard right now. Oregon’s identity is closely tied to water: it grows the food we eat\, it’s the snow we ski on\, the rivers we raft\, and the provider of First Foods for Indigenous peoples. It’s also the basis for our most charismatic and biodiverse ecosystems. As water demand increases across the state and water supply dwindles when we need it the most\, how can we balance competing needs to achieve an equitable water future for all? Join to learn more about water availability under current and future climate conditions\, impacts to vulnerable communities\, and what you can do to modernize water management in Oregon. \nZach Freed is the Sustainable Water Program Director for The Nature Conservancy in Oregon as well as the Chair of the Global Groundwater Group\, an international community of practice for hydrogeologists in nonprofits. He is a hydrologist with more than a decade of experience in science-based collaborative water management throughout the Pacific Northwest. When he isn’t at work\, you can find him searching for springs in central Oregon\, paddling on the Deschutes\, or skiing in the Cascades. \nSisters Firehouse Community Hall:\n 301 S Elm St\, Sisters\, OR 97759

SUMMARY:States are Breaking Up with Plastic
DESCRIPTION:Roses are red\, violets are blue\, states are working to break up with plastic and you should too. \nLet’s face it — our relationship with plastics is toxic. Plastic lasts forever\, which sounds romantic until you consider that virtually every plastic bag\, straw\, utensil\, or wrapper that has ever escaped into the environment is still out there\, infiltrating waterways\, being ingested by hundreds of different species\, and contributing to global litter. This Valentines Day\, listen to speakers from Tennessee\, California\, Oregon\, Washington\, Illinois\, New York\, New Jersey\, Massachusetts\, and Washington\, DC\, discuss how States are leading the charge in ending our toxic relationship with plastic. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Downtown Bend: Know Justice - The Future of Water in Oregon
Join to learn more about water availability under current and future climate conditions\, impacts to vulnerable communities\, and what we can do to modernize water management in Oregon.

SUMMARY:A History of Trees—Fire\, Old-Growth\, and Forest Restoration in Central Oregon: 2023 Nature Nights series
DESCRIPTION:Save the date! The Land Trust is pleased to present its 2023 Nature Nights series. \nThe magnificent ponderosa pine and mixed conifer forests of Central Oregon provide wildlife habitat\, clean water\, and outstanding outdoor experiences for many people. But these forests are changing rapidly and may not provide the same benefits in the years to come. Join the Deschutes Land Trust\, Dr. James Johnston\, and Dr. Andrew Merschel of Oregon State University as they share the results of ongoing tree ring research that describes 500 years of change in forests of Central Oregon. They’ll show how they look at old-growth trees as living time capsules that document fire\, insect attacks\, and birth and death. Learn about the future of Central Oregon’s old-growth forests as they face the challenges of climate change and fire. This presentation is free and ticket sales open one month prior to the event.
