SUMMARY:Journey of the Drum-Celebration of the Griot
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Black History Month during February 2022\, COCC is honored to welcome speakers and programs that highlight Black triumph. Celebrate the past and present triumphs of the Black community while continuing our efforts to challenge oppressive systems and strive toward a more equitable future. \n \nTraditionally\, a Griot is a West African historian\, storyteller\, praise singer\, poet\, or musician. The Griot is a repository or oral tradition and is often seen as a leader due to their position as an advisor to royal personages. \nDuring the event\, there will be a brief presentation by Marcus LeGrand of the Mande societies and how they served as the history books and preserved their history through songs. \nFode will showcase his traditional West African instrumental skills and lead an interactive drum circle after his performance. If you have a drum you would like to use COCC encourages you to bring it for the interactive portion of the event.

SUMMARY:Reclaiming Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Kicking off Oregon Natural Desert Association’s 2022 High Desert Speaker Series is a conversation with filmmaker Faith E. Briggs. For years\, Faith would run through the streets of Brooklyn each morning\, before turning her attention to run 150 miles through three US National Monuments to assess the stakes of public lands conservation and what is lost if previously protected lands are reduced. This talk will feature a screening of her short film “This Land” and Faith’s personal story to share lessons learned as a budding “conservationist” working through a cultural lens\, weaving in reflections on people\, entry points to conservation movements\, and place. \n*Registration will open on January 15 and close two hours before the event begins
