SUMMARY:Community Landfill Tour
DESCRIPTION:**THIS TOUR IS AT MAX CAPACITY. We’ve opened up another tour on July 2nd and there’s still room! Please register in advance! \nCome join The Environmental Center and Rethink Waste Project staff in partnership with Deschutes County Department of Solid Waste for a behind-the-scenes tour of what happens to your trash after it leaves the curb. See Knott Landfill’s trash pit\, check out Deschutes Recycling\, tour the transfer station\, and understand the composting facility. Seeing where our waste goes will impact your decisions in the future and help you think twice about purchases. \nDid you know the Knott Landfill is 110 feet deep? Have you seen the methane flare? Do you know how long it takes a head of lettuce to decompose in the landfill? \nThis is a unique opportunity; the landifll isn’t always open to the public for tours. \nNOTE: There is limited parking so we will ask for folks to carpool. We will meet at 9am at the Ponderosa Park parking lot near the intersection of SE 15h St and SE Virginia Rd to divide into cars. We will be back at the cars by noon at the latest.

SUMMARY:For the Beauty of the Earth: A Call to Care
DESCRIPTION:Kathleen Dean Moore and Rachelle McCabe weave the power of the spoken word and Rachmaninoff’s “Variations on a theme by Corelli” in a Call to Care FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH. \nFriday May 17\, 2019\n7:30-9:00 pm performance and reception following \nSaturday May 18\, 2019\n9:00 – 11:30 am conversation with presenters \nRegister: www.marcusjborg.org/earth \nKathy and Rachelle’s concern is contagious and their method of deepening our understanding is moving and richly eloquent. \nDescriptions: \n\n“In a powerfully moving performance\, a concert pianist and a creative writer weave an urgent call to action on climate disruption and mass extinction.”\n“Creative writer Kathleen Dean Moore and concert pianist Rachelle McCabe inspire audiences to defend the wild\, reeling world in a performance that weaves powerful spoken words into Rachmaninoff’s Variations on a Theme of Corelli.”\n“When words alone are not enough\, we believe in the power of the arts\, especially music\, to open peoples’ hearts to hard truths without breaking them.”\n“The truths of our time are deeply challenging – the on-rushing extinctions\, the coming storms\, and the moral necessity of safeguarding Earth’s abundance of lives.  Words alone cannot express the urgency of action.  And so we turn to music.”\n\nRachelle McCabe\, professor of music at Oregon State University\, enjoys an international career as a concert pianist and artist-teacher. She has performed as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States\, and in Canada\, Southeast Asia\, France\, and England. She holds a doctorate from The University of Michigan\, and a master’s degree from The Juilliard School. \n Kathleen Dean Moore\, an environmental philosopher\, climate activist\, and writer\, has published a dozen books about the beautiful\, reeling world. Her early books of essays – Riverwalking\, Holdfast\, Pine Island Paradox\, Wild Comfort – celebrate the life-graced planet. Now\, her work has turned toward defending it from pillage and plunder\, with three recent books\, Great Tide Rising\, Moral Ground\, and Piano Tide\, a novel.

SUMMARY:Power Hour: A budding opportunity for efficiency
DESCRIPTION:Please RSVP in advance!\nAs the cannabis industry grows\, so does its carbon footprint. Indoor grow operations require a large amount of energy and have historically used inefficient technology for lighting\, ventilation\, and dehumidification. \nJoin us as we learn about a local business who is shining a light on the opportunities that exist for the cannabis industry to shift to more sustainable practices. Deschutes Growery is saving $192\,000 per year by cutting energy use in their operations and producing solar energy on site with a 56.4kW solar installation. They are cutting their energy use with LED lighting and unlike many growers\, they are using LEDs for all growth stages of the plant with optimized lighting wavelengths for different stages of growth. Because their LED lights produce minimal heat\, Deschutes Growery has been able to put the lights much closer to the plants as part of their innovative mobile racking system. \nThis will be a fun and informative session for other cultivators\, carbon-conscious cannabis consumers\, and curious community members who want a glimpse into a burgeoning economic sector in Central Oregon. \nOur panelists will include \n\nJustin Clapick\, Co-founder\, Deschutes Growery\nMarty Stipe\, Senior Energy Analyst\, Energy Trust of Oregon Industry and Agriculture Program\nKandis Bray\, Lighting Specialist\, Energy Trust of Oregon Commercial and Industrial Program\n\nRSVP in Advance \nThank you to our title Power Hour sponsor \n \nThank you to our beverage sponsor

SUMMARY:Dammed to Extinction
DESCRIPTION:For eons\, a one-of-a-kind population of killer whales has hunted chinook salmon along the Pacific Coast. For the last 40 years\, renowned whale scientist Ken Balcomb has closely observed them. He’s familiar with a deadly pattern. Salmon numbers plummet. Orcas starve. The downward spiral compelled him to realize that studying whales was no longer enough. He needed to act. The orcas need roughly a million salmon a year\, where to find a million fish? The solution says Balcomb\, is getting rid of four fish-killing dams 500 miles away\, on the largest tributary to what was\, until it was dammed nearly to death in the last century\, the largest chinook producing river on earth. Studying whales is science. Removing dams is politics. Defiantly mixing the two\, says Balcomb\, has become the most important work of his storied career. Meanwhile\, the race to extinction for salmon and orcas speeds up\, nipping at the heels of the plodding\, clumsy pace of political change in the Pacific Northwest\, where dams and hydropower are king. \nDoors open at 6 pm\, film begins at 6:45. Register in advance here. \nSteven Hawley\, Writer and Filmmaker\, will be at the showing. He is the author of Recovering a Lost River\, a book that inspired the documentary film Dam Nation by Patagonia. \nSponsors: Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Social Justice Committee & the Central Oregon Bitterbrush Broads\, Great Old Broads for Wilderness \nA $10 donation is requested to support expenses for this showing and the continued advocacy for salmon and orcas. A donation is not required to register or attend.
