SUMMARY:Public Meeting for Swalley Draft Watershed Plan-EA
DESCRIPTION:On September 21\, 2018 the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) released a Draft Watershed Plan-Environmental Assessment (Plan-EA) for the Swalley Irrigation District Irrigation Modernization Project. The proposed project will pipe 16.6 miles of canals and laterals over seven years to improve water conservation\, water delivery reliability\, and public safety. NRCS developed the Draft Plan-EA in partnership with Swalley Irrigation District\, the Deschutes Basin Board of Control\, and Farmers Conservation Alliance. A public meeting will be held to inform the community and gather public comments. \nThe Draft Plan-EA and appendices with supporting information are available at oregonwatershedplans.org. Limited copies of the Draft Plan-EA are also available at the Deschutes Public Library in Bend\, the NRCS office in Redmond\, and the Swalley Irrigation District office. DESCRIPTION:Emma Marris will talk about the future of fresh water. She will cover global and local challenges as increasing populations struggle to share a finite amount of water. She’ll delve into one of the biggest challenges for those who want to talk about freshwater: much of it is hidden. Come to gain an understanding of the state of freshwater in the Deschutes and Klamath basins and around the world\, and leave with a set of concrete actions to take and new ways to visualize the Earth’s hidden water. \nThis presentation complements the exhibit\, Water Tables\, featuring works by Pat Clark on display at Bend Art Center and the COCC Library from October 5 – November 25. \nCo-hosted by The Nancy R. Chandler Visiting Scholar Program at COCC Foundation\, Bend Art Center and Coalition for the Deschutes. \nAbout Marris \nEmma Marris has written about the environment and other topics for National Geographic\, Wired\, The New York Times and Outside\, among others. In 2011\, she published her first book\, Rambunctious Garden: Saving Nature in a Post-Wild World. She was named a National Geographic Media Innovation Fellow in June 2018.

Daniele will shed light on Central Oregon’s volcanic tantrums of the past and how the Deschutes River and its watershed have responded to eruptions\, lava flows\, and other geologic events. \nDaniele has a PhD in geology from the University of Oregon. DESCRIPTION:On October 2\, 2018 the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced a public scoping meeting to consider improvements to aging irrigation infrastructure in Lone Pine Irrigation District\, located primarily in northwest Crook County\, as well as northern Deschutes County and southern Jefferson County. Improvements under consideration may be partially funded through the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act of 1954 (PL 83-566) and would address water conservation\, enhancement of aquatic species habitat\, and public safety risks while supporting existing agricultural land use. An avid backpacker\, canoeist\, trail runner and skier\, Lisa worked as a backcountry guide in Canada and New Zealand before completing her Ph.D. at Clemson University\, where she also worked with the National Park Service in their Interpretive Development Program. She joined the Forest Service as a Presidential Management Fellow in 2007. \nAfter working on the Sawtooth and Salmon-Challis National Forests\, and in the Intermountain Regional Office\, Lisa spent 5 years as the Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest‘s Wilderness\, Wild and Scenic Rivers\, and Congressionally Designated Areas Program Manager. Lisa has worked on ecotourism development projects around the world\, including Dominica\, Brazil\, Gabon\, Mali\, and Madagascar. \nShe considers herself incredibly lucky to work and live in Central Oregon with people who share a passion for trails\, wilderness\, rivers\, and outdoor adventures.

In spring 2010\, Susan Conrad launched a journey of the sea and soul. That journey took her north to Alaska where she paddled the 1\,200 mile ribbon of water known as the Inside Passage\, and inward as she discovered the depths of her own strength and courage. \nSusan covered marathon distances for weeks on end in her 18-foot sea kayak. She forged friendships with quirky people in the strangest of places\, and she pretended not to be intimidated by 700-pound grizzly bears and 40-ton whales.

He is a photographer of America’s natural landscapes and a dynamic\, inspiring public speaker. Recently four of his river photos were selected to appear in a new set of 12 USPS Wild & Scenic River Forever stamps that commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Wild and Scenic River Act. \nAn inveterate river-lover\, Tim has canoed or rafted on more than 300 rivers in the United States and western Canada. He lived for 22 years as a nomad in his van\, traveling throughout the country to do research\, writing\, and photography for his book projects. \nTim will present a spectacular slide show and talk based on his new book America’s Great River Journeys. Please join us as Tim takes us on a photographic tour of 50 of the finest river trips in America\, including the Deschutes\, John Day\, Rogue and Umpqua. \n  \nTim has been running rivers for five decades and has worked at the center of river conservation efforts the whole time. He was the recipient of American Rivers’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 1988 and many subsequent honors. Paddler magazine named Tim one of the top ten river conservationists of our time and one of the “100 great paddlers of the last century.” \nThe doors open at 6:00 pm. DESCRIPTION:Sampling benthic macroinvertebrates\, the aquatic life form of insects including mayflies and stoneflies\, provides important insights into the health of Whychus Creek. Volunteers will meet at Creekside Park in Sisters for a sampling training\, then\, in teams of three or four\, collect macroinvertebrate samples from sites along Whychus.
