The Fumes in Focus film helps us visualize the air pollution from gas stoves.  \nJoin The Environmental Center’s Climate Solutions program at our first Power Hour event of the year\, featuring Willamette Valley-based environmental justice organization\, Beyond Toxics. This year\, the Power Hour series will focus on healthy\, energy efficient homes and the resources available to improve our living spaces and the built environment.  \nThe event will feature a screening of Beyond Toxics’ eye-opening documentary\, Fumes in Focus\, highlighting the real health and environmental impacts of natural gas stoves that often go unseen. This project utilized advanced FLIR (forward looking Infrared) technology to capture and visualize the immediate emissions during stove operation.  \nLisa Arkin\, Executive Director of Beyond Toxics’ will present more information on their Visualizing Air Pollution in Gas Stoves study and be available for questions from attendees. Other local organizations and businesses who can help connect folks with resources to learn more about upgrading appliances in their homes such as Energize Bend and GreenSavers will be available at the event. \nMeet our speaker\nLisa Arkin\, the Executive Director of Beyond Toxics\, has provided innovative policy leadership and grassroots organizing for Beyond Toxics since 2006. Under her guidance\, Beyond Toxics embraced the principles of diversity and equity\, and adopted an anti-racist ethos to become Oregon’s first environmental justice organization. Arkin is dedicated to placing human rights\, racial and social justice at the forefront of all environmental protection and climate resiliency policies. SUMMARY:Hands on Habitat - Beaver Works Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:This is a one-day project to plant beaver and other wildlife habitat in Tetherow Crossing Park in Redmond\, Oregon \nDifficulty level: Easy/Medium \nItinerary: Planting will take place between 9AM and 4PM on Saturday\, October 21st. \nTasks will include: Digging in somewhat-rocky soil\, assessing survival\, growth rate\, and recruitment of existing plants\, planting potted native riparian plants\, removing weeds by hand\, and installing wildlife trail cameras. \nWhat you’ll need: A positive attitude and work ethic; Plan to bring your own lunch and we’ll bring the special treats. We’ll have work gloves\, but feel free to bring your own. Work will be outside\, so dress for the weather. \nAbout the Location: Tetherow Crossing Park occupies a scenic stretch of the trout-filled upper Deschutes River. This park is home to one of the oldest standing houses in Deschutes County. Our work site is in a really picturesque and accessible section of the park. Volunteers will be part of the second stage of a multi-year project\, as well as learn about beaver\, wildlife habitat use\, and riparian restoration. There are no bathrooms nearby. \nWe’ll need about 10 people for this project – so share this with your friends and make a fun day out of it while helping to restore beaver habitat! \nSIGN UP HERE!

DESCRIPTION:Discover Your Forest\, in partnership with the Deschutes National Forest and the Upper Deschutes River Communities\, is hosting a public screening of The West is Burning followed by a panel discussion with specialists in land management\, forest/fire ecology\, fire management\, and adaptive communities. \nThe free community event will be held at the La Pine Activity Center\, 16450 Victory Way\, La Pine on Thursday\, October 5th. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and childcare beginning at 6:00 p.m. \nThe West is Burning examines the history of forest management and social conflict that has contributed to current forest conditions\, causing longer fire seasons and unprecedented impacts. The film emphasizes the need to act now to generate positive change in our forests\, watersheds\, and communities. Six real-life perspectives drive the film’s narrative to help raise awareness about the conditions of forests in the western U.S. Their stories demonstrate the need to embrace a new era of forest stewardship\, and the unique partnerships that are being built across community-based organizations\, government entities\, and private and non-governmental organizations. These thought leaders highlight the need for a unified response to climate change\, land use\, and forest restoration\, and emphasize the importance of community-based solutions to these challenges. \nRepresentatives from local forestry and fire organizations will host tables and share information on wildfire preparedness before and after the event. \nThis is a free event with dinner and childcare provided. Cowan’s experience in mycology began at the State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science & Forestry. Since then\, as a biologist\, researcher\, stewardship forester and wildland firefighter her work has focused on fungal ecology and forest health. SUMMARY:Science Pub: Science\, Spirituality and a Sustainable Future
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating Science Pub looking at the connections between science and religion. OSU-Cascades biologist Matt Orr will explain how the Anthropocene\, Earth’s present geological epoch\, is defined by a decline in environmental ecosystems\, as well as by human responses to the decline in the forms of anxiety\, guilt\, grief and illness. \nOrr will share ways in which spiritual practices have evolved in response to other significant crises over time\, and examine how contemporary spirituality practices are evolving in response to the environmental crisis. He’ll look at how this evolution may continue and improve both the environmental and human condition. \n5 p.m. DOORS OPEN/ORDER FOOD AND BEVERAGES – Enjoy dinner with fellow attendees. \n6:30 p.m. PRESENTATION – Presentation begins in Hop Mahal. \n\n\n\n\nScience Pubs are where we take science out of the laboratory and bring it to the community. Join discussions with researchers from throughout OSU and OSU-Cascades about the work they do to help solve the world’s toughest challenges. \nScience Pubs are made possible with support from Worthy Brewing. \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nMatt Orr is an associate professor at Oregon State University – Cascades. His research interests focus on restoration ecology in forest\, field and stream habitats in Central Oregon. His work has included studying the behavior of scavengers; the application of restoration ecology to medicine; and the connections between science and religion. He received a Ph.D. in population biology from University of California\, Davis. \nRegister here!
