Alexa Martinez\, Wildlife Biologist at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge\, will shed light on the fascinating lives of native mollusks thriving in the waterways of eastern Oregon. Learn how Jamon Van Den Hoek and his team in the Conflict Ecology Lab use open satellite data to monitor damage caused by armed conflict and to develop new approaches to map refugee movements and assess environmental and climatic change in politically fragile contexts around the globe. SUMMARY:AdvenTours: Tumalo Creek Scenic Hike
DESCRIPTION:Adventure: Wanderlust Tours is excited to bring more access to the outdoors by partnering with AdvenChair to help those with mobility challenges get into the outdoors and explore beautiful areas that initially may not seem accessible. With the AdvenChair off-road wheelchair and the incredible team of volunteers at AdvenChair\, we will experience a magnificent ecosystem filled with burgeoning flora and fauna\, spring migratory birds\, and more that find refuge and resources in Tumalo Creek. \nNaturalist Guided Experience: We will begin our adventure along the crystal clear waters of Tumalo Creek. Our route will take us through a section of Tumalo canyon where we will immerse ourselves in some of Central Oregon’s finest geologic features. This scenic area just outside Bend’s front door known as Shevlin Park was founded as a beacon of conservation. Early 1900’s Bend was almost exclusively a logging community and as many areas became heavily logged\, demand grew for a nearby area to be protected for recreation. In 1920\, Shevlin-Hixon Lumber Company\, under the guidance of Thomas W. Shevlin and Hugh O’Kane\, donated the land to the city of Bend with the stipulation that it be used for park purposes. This initial donation helped establish the park\, and it has been expanded over the years through additional land acquisitions. \nLearn more and register here!

We’ll witness the seemingly placid Deschutes turn torrid as it careens over ancient lava rock falls while aspen groves sweep along the river’s edge. The Fumes in Focus film helps us visualize the air pollution from gas stoves.  \nJoin The Environmental Center’s Climate Solutions program at our first Power Hour event of the year\, featuring Willamette Valley-based environmental justice organization\, Beyond Toxics. This year\, the Power Hour series will focus on healthy\, energy efficient homes and the resources available to improve our living spaces and the built environment.  \nThe event will feature a screening of Beyond Toxics’ eye-opening documentary\, Fumes in Focus\, highlighting the real health and environmental impacts of natural gas stoves that often go unseen. This project utilized advanced FLIR (forward looking Infrared) technology to capture and visualize the immediate emissions during stove operation.  \nLisa Arkin\, Executive Director of Beyond Toxics’ will present more information on their Visualizing Air Pollution in Gas Stoves study and be available for questions from attendees. Other local organizations and businesses who can help connect folks with resources to learn more about upgrading appliances in their homes such as Energize Bend and GreenSavers will be available at the event. \nMeet our speaker\nLisa Arkin\, the Executive Director of Beyond Toxics\, has provided innovative policy leadership and grassroots organizing for Beyond Toxics since 2006. Under her guidance\, Beyond Toxics embraced the principles of diversity and equity\, and adopted an anti-racist ethos to become Oregon’s first environmental justice organization. Arkin is dedicated to placing human rights\, racial and social justice at the forefront of all environmental protection and climate resiliency policies.
