SUMMARY:Pints and Politics: Rethinking Waste
DESCRIPTION:In 10 years\, Deschutes County’s landfill will be full. Plans for how to handle solid waste in Deschutes County once the landfill is full must be made now. The county is exploring the idea of developing a new landfill within Deschutes County and the idea of hauling solid waste to a facility located outside of Deschutes County. Join OLCV to explore these two options and find out how our community can be more efficient with waste management.

SUMMARY:Community Landfill Tour #3
DESCRIPTION:Did you know the Knott Landfill is 110 feet deep? Have you seen the methane flare? Do you know how long it takes a head of lettuce to decompose in the landfill? \nCome join The Environmental Center and Rethink Waste Project staff in partnership with Deschutes County Department of Solid Waste for a behind-the-scenes tour of what happens to your trash after it leaves the curb. See Knott Landfill’s trash pit\, check out Deschutes Recycling\, tour the transfer station\, and understand the composting facility. Seeing where our waste goes will impact your decisions in the future and help you think twice about purchases. \nThis is a unique opportunity; the landfill isn’t always open to the public for tours. Please register here in advance. \nPLEASE NOTE: There is limited parking at the landfill\, so we will ask for folks to carpool. We will meet at 9am at the Ponderosa Park parking lot near the intersection of SE 15th St and SE Virginia Rd to divide into cars. If your car is already full\, you can go directly to the landfill and we’ll meet you there. We will be back at the cars by noon at the latest. Please dress for weather! Bring layers — it is often windy at Knott Landfill.

SUMMARY:Zero Waste (Green) Home: Bea Johnson is Coming to Bend!
DESCRIPTION:Sustainability isn’t just about how green your home\, office\, or school is – it’s about how you live and make decisions within those spaces and beyond. Which is why we’re kicking off the 2019 Green Tour with zero waste extraordinaire\, Bea Johnson! Join us for a memorable evening that will inspire you to reflect on your own lifestyle and habits\, and provide practical solutions for living simply and reducing waste. \nSince 2008\, Bea and her family have produced a mere PINT of trash per year. (That’s one jar\, folks.) Bea has been featured on TV shows and in publications all over the world. She has empowered hundreds of thousands of people to adopt waste-free living\, open unpackaged shops\, and conceive reusable products. As the leading spokesperson for zero waste living\, she has completed 19 international speaking tours and has worked with companies like Google\, Amazon\, Starbucks\, and IKEA\, to name a few. \nBea initiated a global movement. And here in Central Oregon\, she’ll lend a unique perspective on how this fits into our own local sustainability efforts. Why incentivize smaller-footprint homes in our growing community? (Less space = less stuff and less energy). Is it possible to retrofit a 1920’s home and not produce an excess amount of trash? \nReserve your tickets today!\nLearn more about Bea Johnson here. You can also check out her book at the Deschutes Public Library\, or purchase from Dudley’s Bookshop Cafe \nIf you have questions\, or if we can assist with accommodations for this event\, please email Ani or call 541-385-6908.

SUMMARY:Redmond Repair Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Local volunteers will help repair your broken stuff – for FREE! \nHas your blender lost its whirl? Hole in your favorite jeans? Broken clasp on your best bracelet? Bring us your small household appliances\, sewing repairs\, jewelry repairs\, and small furniture that need a little work. \nVolunteers with the Environmental Center’s Rethink Waste Project will come and help guide the repair of small appliances or devices that no longer function. Bring your stuff that’s not working and let’s see if we can collaborate to change that. SUMMARY:Film Screening: Bag It
DESCRIPTION:Surfrider Foundation is partnering with OSU-Cascades to discuss climate change and next steps after banning plastic bags. What more can we do to reduce plastic and better our community? The evening includes beer and appetizers from 10 Barrel Brewing and a short presentation from Rethink Waste Program Manager\, Ani Kasch. \nThe film\, Bag It\, is a hilarious tale of one man’s quest to use less plastic. What starts as a film about plastic bags evolves into a wholesale investigation into plastic and its effect on our lives\, bodies\, and waterways.  All those who sign up or are Surfrider members will be entered into a raffle (membership is only $25). \nPlease register in advance. This event is free to Surfrider members.  \nNote: Location on campus is Tykeson Hall 111

SUMMARY:The Future of Waste in Deschutes County - Sunriver
DESCRIPTION:As more and more people move to Deschutes County\, more and more trash is being created for drop off at our nearly full Knott Landfill. Recycling\, while an important part of the process\, is not the solution to addressing the massive volume of waste in our community. Come learn about what to do to help make an impact to reduce waste in our community. We will address the current state of recycling and how to do it right\, but talk more in-depth about other forms of waste diversion and prevention. What can you do to help rather than hinder? \nAni Kasch is the Rethink Waste Program Manager at The Environmental Center\, a local non-profit organization working to embed sustainability into daily life in Central Oregon where she has been educating the community for 2.5 years. She is passionate about waste reduction\, especially around wasted food. She is an avid bike commuter and enjoys cooking and eating local food.

SUMMARY:Closing the Food Loop: How to Make Composting Work for Your Restaurant
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, an estimated 25 to 40 percent of all food produced or imported for consumption in the United States is never eaten. Of that wasted food\, 40 percent is estimated to come from consumer-facing businesses— like restaurants\, event venues\, etc. And all that wasted food means wasted money\, by some estimates as much as $57 billion annually for U.S. businesses. Here in Deschutes County\, wasted food makes up over 25% of waste at Knott Landfill by tonnage – making it the largest category of waste in the landfill! \nIt’s time to rethink food waste\, and we want to help you do it. \nThis free\, interactive panel discussion will dig into tips on getting started\, infrastructure\, troubleshooting\, and more. Learn about local food waste resources and hear from food service businesses that are composting on-site and off-site. This discussion is open to owners\, managers\, and staff in the culinary community. And we hope attendees will chime in with your experience and expertise as well! \n\n\n\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Plastic-Free Resolutions: Protecting Your Health in 2024
DESCRIPTION:With a new year comes new resolutions for protecting and improving the health of our bodies\, families\, communities\, and the planet that we all call home. One healthy resolution to consider is to reduce or eliminate plastic from your life. But with plastic used for everything from making clothing to carrying food and drinks\, this can seem like a daunting task. \nJoin Plastic Pollution Coalition on January 18 for their first webinar of the new year: Plastic-Free Resolutions: Protecting Your Health in 2024. During this event\, they will offer tangible\, common sense ways to reduce the amount of plastic you use in your daily life. They’ll discuss why it’s important to avoid plastics\, provide you with DIY and low- and no-cost solutions\, and highlight helpful products you may turn to when you need an extra hand. \nPanelists for this inspiring conversation include Queer Brown Vegan Isaias Hernandez; Zero Waste Farmer Manju Kumar; and Co-Owner & Co-Founder of Life Without Plastic Jay Sinha. The conversation will be moderated by MADE SAFE Founder Amy Ziff.
